There's a dev over on XDA, vashypooh, that has created one of the best, most comprehensive tools I've seen for doing a whole bunch of the good stuff. It can root the Fire, unroot it, install proper ADB drivers, let you know what mode the device is in, it will even install a custom recovery.
It's all done via a very simple menu run in a command line window. I've tried it and it makes things very easy. I used it to root my Fire then install a custom recovery from TWRP.
It's all run from your Windows PC.
