Back button functioning as recent apps button

Some reason my back button isn't working the light is lit up. When I hold the back button in it functions as the recent apps button. The recent apps button is working fine, anyone got a solution? It's sending me nuts and I don't really want to try factory resetting my phone

Thanks, I tried that and nothing happened. It did however go back to normal for several hours now the problem has reoccured.

Ok, try Safe Mode, which temporarily disables all 3rd party apps. This can narrow things down to either a 3rd party app causing interference, or something wrong with the firmware or hardware. https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-21007

To enter safe mode:
While the phone is on press the power button.
When you see the power off showing on your phone's screen , long press on it about 2 seconds.
Then left finger up
You should then see a window showing on phone's screen reboot to safe mode
Click on ok

To get back into normal mode when you want to , just reboot the phone
