Background usage limits

I have had my phone from launch day (forgot how many days lol - think few weeks now). I have never factory reset after setting up my phone initially. Have around 100 apps installed. I only saw 1 app (Maps) in the deep sleeping app and sleeping app section. I also see 4 apps in the never sleep section (don't recall me putting them there)

I'm realising that I did a factory reset of my phone about 2-weeks ago, so perhaps I'm not seeing any (automatically) sleeping apps because it's not been long enough.

It does sound like you've had the phone for a longer period than me. I'm surprised there's only 1 app that's been automatically put to sleep, and even more surprised that it's in both the sleeping AND deep sleeping category? That's also somewhat worrying that there are apps in the never sleep category if you didn't manually place them there somehow.

I have 6 sleeping apps, 48 deep sleeping apps and 6 never sleeping apps.

I have had my phone for about 6 weeks I think.

So just to clarify, all those apps were placed there automatically? There was no manual input from you?

If so, that's again somewhat disconcerting, especially the deep sleep and never sleep categories. The sleeping category makes sense to have this automatic process applied, as once the app is manually launched, it will come out of sleep. My understanding of "deep sleep" is that the apps will only be active when you are directly interacting with them - I'd have thought this would be a purely manual choice to make.

The same goes for the never sleep category - I'd have thought this should be a manual choice to make, rather than an automated one. Having this automated opens up the possibility of using up more battery life than necessary for eg. certain apps that you may only use a lot periodically.

I think you may be overly disconcerted...

If you need an app, you will run it and it will automatically come back to life.

I am pretty sure I did not manually select any of these never sleep apps... Here are my never sleepers;

Android auto, Duo, Messenger, Skype, SmartThIngs and WhatsApp.

Kind of makes sense.

You can manually put things to sleep or let the system do that , it has a + sign in each category Screenshot_20210328-232712_Device%20care.jpg

Been over 4 weeks since my last factory reset, and still nothing in the Sleeping, Deep sleeping or Never sleeping apps categories. Really strange. My battery life (particularly standby) has been good though. I lose about 0.3-0.4% per hour during standby with AOD disabled, and about 1-1.5% per hour with AOD enabled.
(note I haven't done anything like use debloater software/apps or adb stuff etc)

So I'm not worried about battery life or performance. Just curious why this "automatic" process isn't being done on my phone. I have suspicion that it's something to do with having developer options enabled - perhaps the "Standby apps" function (in developer options) takes over this process?

On re-reading above posts, I've noticed the people who have posted that they have apps being automatically put to sleep etc appear to not have developer options enabled, hence why I'm thinking it's related to that.

Turn developer settings off and see

I agree..turn it off and reset those settings.

I do indeed have them turned on, but all I changed was the animation scalings.

My list includes several sleeping and deep sleeping apps.

I haven't changed anything else in dev settings except for the animation settings, so I suppose it's not that.

Maybe you accidentally changed something...Easy enough to turn off to test...

Yes, I've turned it off. But I'm certain I didn't change anything else. I'll probably move on from this though, as it's not affecting my everyday use. Was just curious about this "issue".

By the way, it's so slow going from disabling/halving the animation scalings to normal again - makes me wonder what some people are missing who haven't adjusted those settings!

I agree! I have no idea why they would want to slow down a phone with animations.

First thing I always do with a new phone is half the values.

Has been three days since I disabled developer options, and still nothing has been automatically shifted into sleeping, deep sleeping, or never sleeping apps categories.

Given I'm finding battery life to be quite impressive, time to move on I guess, and assume that perhaps my "carrier version" (or whatever other variable) has prevented such automation to display in those categories.

Very strange indeed , who's your carrier?

I have developer options activated although I haven't made any changes. I also have apps showing in Sleep and Deep Sleep, although I don't know how many days it takes for them to be placed in those categories. I did manually add a few apps to the Never Sleep option.

That is a good point...maybe the OP should add an app or two into these lists to see if it changes any behavior.

Interesting. It's been about 5 days since I disabled developer settings (and then re-enabled it after about 3 days). I've just noticed my first app being automatically put into the Sleeping apps category.

So seems like all is well?

Glad it working now !

Interestingly that was the only one automatically added in so far, due to "high background usage" (that is, it has a history of it). It seems to me like my phone has applied a different formula of "automatically adding/allocating" various apps compared to other people.

I note at least one of the users in this thread posted that they only noticed 1 app in Sleeping despite having the phone since launch, so I'm not alone.

I realize I'm a little late to this party but I've noticed exactly the opposite on my 21 Ultra. I thought it was bad on the 20 but on the 21 I got notifications, reminders and suggestions everyday for a while there. It was annoying as all get out. The only one that I didn't want to sleep was an audio app that always played as soon as connected to my car. I put it in the never sleeping list and have never gone longer than a day without using it yet it's always sleep and never auto starts.
