Backing up HTC One

For sms back up go into app settings. Choose to backup out of backup/restore.
I usually email myself the backup. Then download it to new phone and restore.

As for HTC backup it is preferable over Google and has made me very happy. It makes it so much easier when I have to reset or replaced phone.

HTC backup worked surprisingly well for me, except for the fact that it didn't restore app data. I just signed into my HTC/dropbox account when booted into a clean phone, and the phone automatically downloaded the apps one by one, arranged shortcuts on my home screen and even restored my wallpaper and ringtones ( i think)
