i backed up xperia l1 to computer. i can see some files when i browse but do not see photos that are in a photo app it is a photo gallery by simplemobiletools. so has it not backed up?. will i lose photos if do reset?

Check in Google Photos. If they're there, they're no longer on the phone. But they're backed up to the Google cloud.
Once you have everything backed, you might want to install TWRP, so you can just boot to TWRP and back up everything (the entire userdata partition) in one shot. And restore it all in one shot too. (If no one has come out with a version that can decrypt the phone yet, you have to remove the screen lock first every time you want to use TWRP - but that's still better than backing up 100 separate things every time you do an update (which you should do in case the update blows up).
