Backup App Suggestions

I'd like to turn to the trusty folks of the E4GT board on Android Central to help me out with a question I've had for sometime. Awhile back when I had rooted by Motorola Photon I had downloaded (and paid for) MyBackup Pro. I wanted to back up all of my apps including data (like Angry Bird levels and my Drag Racing Premium cars). Upon procuring my E4GT I never rooted, and never installed the apps on my device.

Bringing me to today. I, like everyone else, am waiting for my OTA update to ICS that may or may not come before the end of the year. I'm looking forward to the improvements that seem to be made, but I also realize I'm going to be way behind on Jellybean. That being said, I'm looking to update to some custom ROMs.

To do so, I'd like to keep my progress and such in a lot of the apps/games I have. Is it necessary for me to root before doing so? I thought it was, but recently heard that you didn't. In addition, is there an app out there you would suggest that does a better job of saving information and applying to a new rom (or new device GS3 in 29 days). I also plan on swapping my wife's info from her Evo Design 4G onto my device if I do buy a new one.

I guess to summarize: Swapping data (everything!) - Need Root? Best App? Any other suggestions?

Thanks!!

Another recommendation for Titanium Back up. Get the Pro version, it's well worth it.

You can save everything to the SD card and shoot it up to the cloud as well for extra security.

You'll need root. This app alone is worth rooting.

Definitely stay away from mybackup pro. I used it to backup my data from my droid incredible and tried to transfer it to my E4GT. It caused all kinds of duplicates and there was a lot of corruption in my files.

Yea I think at this point I'm tempted to go in and buy Titanium Back Up. At the time, I believe both were considered about the same but I definitely made the wrong choice. Luckily these days its so easy for a phone to get rooted that I shouldn't have any problem moving all my stuff phone to phone pretty quickly. At this point I just have to look through the forum to see if my wife's Evo Design 4G has an easy root solution.

I did too because at the time I didn't want to root but read that titanium backup was much better. One of the things that ticked me off with mybackup was that it corrupted my text message file to the point where I had a ton of threads that were dated 1969 and there was nothing I could do to get rid of them. They would just sit there at the bottom and wouldn't go away no matter what I tried. I also think it made my phone laggy. For example, when I add a shortcut for an app, the list would take about 3-5 seconds too come up. Since I did a factory reset and put everything back the list comes up instantly. I have other examples and maybe they don't all relate but I'm sure some of them do. Good luck.

What has the experience with Titanium Backup been with various app data. How well does it do at backing up and restoring that information to a different ROM or different device? I can't imagine I'll run into many problems moving from the E4GT and the GS3 but I'd be curious if I should expect issues from the Evo Design 4G to the E4GT?

I've used Titanium Backup Pro and have had good results. As a general rule of thumb, depending upon what you are doing to your phone (changing phones or root/ROM), suggest you do not backup/restore system data - can make your system wonky.

Just in case, it's a good idea to copy your finished backup file to your computer.

Here's a link to more specific info. about TiBu Pro:

SMS Backup+ is a good app for backing up your SMS/MMS http://https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zegoggles.smssync&feature=search_result#?t=W10.

More info. about SMS Backup+ can be found at http://https://github.com/jberkel/sms-backup-plus/

Moving app data from phone to phone or restoring app data to a recently flashed or wiped phone will work, but as ruh-roh-raggy said, be very very careful restoring any system data since it can cause boot loops and other errors. If you stick with just restoring the app, you will be fine.

I think my biggest things I want to be able to save are some APK + Data (know this requires root). So I can save my progress in a couple of apps. Outside of that, I may try pulling through SMS data as that has worked in the past.

Can't think of anything else of value I'd be concerned about saving.

Another vote for TiBackUp.

Got the free version nearly immediately. Very very quickly paid for the Pro. Well worth it. Saved me a few times.

Ability to upload to Box/Dropbox also really nice.

Use SMS Backup & Restore by Ritesh Sahu.

This program works better than anything else I've found. The other programs tend to have multiple duplicates and seem to totally miss conversations. This one is legit though.

I totally agree with this. I use SMS Backup and Restore for texts and its always worked flawlessly. And it's free! Wonderful app.

I'd like to thank everyone for their feedback on this. I was leaning towards Titanium Backup and this has really helped me be more comfortable with that. Regarding the SMS I will certainly look into the SMS Backup and Restore. I'm amazed that of all the responses received so far, those are the only two apps mentioned. Their developers should be proud.

A lot of people really like TBbut I personally use MyBackup Pro. They have 2 free versions (1 requires root and the other doesn't) and they also have a paid version which doesn't require root. It backs up app apk's and data as well as SMS, MMS, Call Log, ect.
