Backup question

Has anyone tried restoring a nandroid backup to a different phone than it was made with? Will it work?
assuming I wipe everything on the receiving phone

I have successfully restored a nandroid from my zv5 to a different zv5 v. I once restored a zv4 stock nand to a zv5 phone and it worked but obviously the screen didn't work. Screen cast was really handy around that time last year.

They are the same phones, purchased at the same time
I want to set up a nice Rom with all apps and everything then transfer that to my wifes phone via said backup

That should work if there aren't any hardware difference (which sometimes happens). Let us know how it turns out.
