Backup Stock Rom before rooting?

You will need to root first, then install CM recovery or twrp, make a complete nandroid backup through the recovery before you install a new ROM. This is the only way I know to do it. The best thing to do is read and read some more, there are lots of tutorials on rooting on xda forums. Hope this helps you. Good luck. :)

I could find an ROM online, though Australian Stock ROMs, are nearly impossible to come by.
Is it possible to use an US ROM on an Australian device?

If you are rooting you dont need to back up ur rom, it doesnt change ur rom..rooting unlocks ur phone so u can do things like change ur rom. I only backed up contacts n apps before rooting which really isnt nessecary unless u do factory reset, then after u root u can change ur rom(after u bck up ur stock rom) of course
