BAD experience, I'm out....

If a phone is broken and under warranty Verizon will swap it out. Just take the phone to a good Verizon corporate owned store and demonstrate the defect.

I would suggest not going into a big story about updates - just say "This used to work like this and now it is broken." Offer to show them that it works on a new phone of the same model in store if there are any questions.

So it wasn't a hardware button issue, just a one off early software glitch. Are we sure. It didn't sound like it. It sounded like the Power button wouldn't respond for a while, and it should. Advice for other early sufferers anyhow. Samsung make Recovery or rebooting easy.

Well, since the fix requires you to hold both non responsive buttons in and you do in fact wind up getting a response from that (rebooting to the recovery menu), I'd definitely say it's not a hardware problem at all, but a software glitch. Also, it hasn't happened to me again at all since that first time.
