What is it and what will it be used for? Sorry for the newb question lol

It's used to measure atmospheric pressure so can be useful for...

weather forecasting :)

no idea why or how it will be useful. If I remember correctly, the xoom has one. Not seen anything for that either...

Barometers are often more accurate for determining altitude than GPS is - the error margin for the Z-axis with GPS is pretty high. Combining it with input from the barometer can get you better positioning.

I have a Casio Pathfinder watch with a barometer. it does allow somewhat accurate altitude readings as well as barometric pressure. so in conjunction with Gps you can have really accurate altitude readings. differential

Sports GPS devices (used by hikers and bicyclists) often use analog barometers to calculate altitude (much more accurate than GPS altitude). Putting a barometer in your cell phone is one more nail in Garmin's coffin.

Like the article said, barometers are too sensitive to changes in elevation to be useful for weather. And I don't know about you guys but my GPS is spot on even in the worst weather. So what's the point?

My Xoom has one....useless. Take it out and put in a HDMI out port.

EDIT : I didn't think about hiking and camping with the Nexus. I have one in the Xoom which is too big to take hiking and nothing uses the barometer thats, why I said useless.
