Battery charging mode

The Nexus 4 is my first android phone I'm loving it so far!

I have one question I haven't been able to find on Google. When I plug in the phone a black-and-white battery screen comes up and flashes showing the phone is charging, at least I think. I haven't waited to find out, I just end up turning the phone on every time.

My question is, what is this charging mode and how does it work? It doesn't seem to charge any faster than the phone being on.

That is probably just an animated screen when you plug in. I think the Jellybean 4.2 OS has a bunch of screens that can play while you charge. Like a screen saver.

If you plug your phone in when it's off, the screen is simply a conformation that its connected and charging, and gives you an idea of how much battery life it has without the need to turn your phone on. Hope that helps
