Just got my chromecast yesterday and haven't really got to deep into it. Wonder how much phone battery does it use when casting? Google play movies I started watching gravity because it was free and as movie played my screen timeout went into effect and movie still played while screen was off.

In normal use the Chromecast is doing all the work streaming and decoding video from the internet so your phone is doing very little, it's just acting as a remote control. So usually you won't notice any extra battery drain.

It's different of you use an app like allcast to send local content straight from your phone. The phone will have to work hard to decode and send the data directly to the cc.

Similarly if you use the cc to cast your laptop screen, the laptop is doing the hard work.

Chromecast especially the Chromecast audio is a battery pig. Anyone who says otherwise don't know what they are talking about. Using the Chromecast to cast to Netflix or Hulu I watch a 45 minute program and my battery goes down 5%. Streaming music casting to audio drains the battery over 10% a hour. Just as bad a Bluetooth.

That's weird. The api only calls for header information to start the stream. You can turn off your phone and the stream will continue. If you are having battery issues with Bluetooth also, might be your phone/software. My phone barely feels either as it relates to battery life.

Are you streaming the music ON your phone to the cc...or...are you using an app that is Chromecast compatible to stream music from some outside source to start the cc playing?

It makes a huge difference.
