Hi everyone, this is my first time to post, if I have done this wrong, please forgive me. Any help would be appreciated. My question is, I just upgraded my Samsung S2 epic 4g touch from ice cream sandwhich os to the Jellybean os. After the upgrade I was checking on the battery to see what was discharging the battery, and screen is always on top using 80% battery, and the android system, device idle, cell standby are down at 8%. Before on ice cream sandwhich, usually device idle or cell standby were the top two items discharging the battery. Even after not using the phone all night and looking at it first thing in the morning, it still shows that the screen is using the battery at 80%, is this normal for Jellybean? I did not perform a factory reset after upgrading to the Jellybean os, There are so many conflicting comments on the forum as to whether you should or you shouldn't, so....I have not done so yet. Would appreciate any input from you all.

Two questions to start with: did you charge the phone overnight and was it still plugged in when you checked the battery stats in the morning?

That's a good thing, it means there are no weird system issues killing your battery. These modern screens are big and bright, they suck a lot of juice.

I would do a factory data reset...which sucks and its a pain! :-(

I noticed you are on the Galaxy S3, is the screen your highest % of the battery?

The screen will always be the main source of battery drain. The only time it won't be is if u just look at ur screen 3-4 times a day and have a few phone calls.

Try doing a hard reset (pulling out ur battery with ur phone on, wait 10-15 seconds, pop it back in and turn it on) fully charge it, unplug it and leave it over night unplugged. In the morning go check what drained the battery tbe most while u slept and the phone was idle.

I agree, it's not unusual for the screen to use the lion's share of your battery even with what I would consider very moderate use. It's a bit of a coincidence that it would be the same number twice in a row looking at it, but my inclination is to say it's exactly that: a coincidence. I'm also with ttwiitch on the test: if you charge it, then leave it on and unplugged without using the screen at all for a few hours- just let it go into standby or play some music, whatever- then look at the battery stats, you should see the screen number be very low. If it isn't, there might be some other issues at play, such as an app or a misbehaving system process turning and/or leaving the screen on when it shouldn't. It's also worth noting that if you carry your phone in a tight pocket or purse, you might be bumping the power button as you carry it around, which could also cause a hit to battery life (both in screen time and preventing the phone from sleeping) if it happens often enough, though this is probably unlikely.

Good morning, I done what you said and here are my stats this morning. battery at 95%, Device idle 42%, cell standby 36%, screen 20%. This is more what I am use to seeing....so I think my phone is ok, thanks for your help! greatly appreciate it.

The only thing that really matters is how long the battery lasts. Once you're using the phone normally again, if it lasts roughly as long as it did before the update I think you're good. In all likelihood, the new firmware is just measuring your battery stats differently.

Enjoy Jellybean!

For what is is worth, if you had previously set your screen brightness manually to a lower level, the upgrade defaults it back to auto. I had to reset mine.

I rock my screen at full brightness 24/7....I only see a loss of about 30 minutes less a day in total power consumption.

The screen being at the top of the list is normal.

Not surprising, with our high-tech screens (SuperAmoled Plus, QHD, .etc) requiring a lot of power to operate. Screen takes up about 40% of my battery, though it doesn't really bother me as I only use the screen heavily at home.

Not so sure I would do that unless my battery was draining very quickly. By that I mean, less than half a day with everything running on it.
