Battery draining A LOT overnight while doing nothing - why?

Excess battery drain typically are app related, e g. You installed some app that just eats up battery even when you are not using it.

That or you have a very poor cell signal that your phone tries real hard to maintain a connection.

How can I test if my area has poor cell signal? I do not think my area does, but again, I have no way of knowing. If by bar signal, it's almost at max. Should I turn off mobile data tonight to test?

Then you have some app doing a lot of dirty work in the back ground. Android allows app running in the background even if you are not using it.

What kind of email accounts have you configured on your phone to access? Are they all using push email?

I think since you arent giving the phone a full charge anymore, its eating away at itself. I could be wrong, but I honestly think you should go back to the old way and charge fully at night so you have 100% when you wake up in the morning.

That doesn't happen with Li-On batteries.

if it was my device and having the battery drain..steps I would take
restart my phone incase something got out of whack its usually a soft rest when u do this
next if you had this problem while out and about I would say poor reception maybe bad signal or carrier problem. but at home your phone would default to wifi if you already sign in to your account.
that out of the way for now if restart didn't do anything put in safe mode for overnight when this happens , why because your disabling all your downloaded apps you installed and just using the native apps that were installed now while doing this and battery drain improved dramatically then we know it was a app the you installed that causing a problem and will have to delete them all and see one by one which is the problem app . hope this will help and if you try this keep us posted. @rimz808

That's the hard part, wish there was a way to tell which app would be causing the drain. And all my email accounts are with Google. So no push email

Thanks for that. I'll restart my device before bed and see how much it drained overnight. The safe mode is a good idea. I can try that if the drain is still a lot overnight.

I just checked my cell signal strength with an app, and I'm getting about -102 dbm strength. Doesn't seem to be that strong I think? I'm with At&t. What are other people getting?

It's a 3rd party app you've installed, that's what they do... drain your battery and cause other mysterious problems. There's a reason they're free :O

UPDATE

Did a restart of my phone before bed. Went to bed with about 68%. Woke up about 8 hours after and checked. Battery was at 55%, so a 13% drop. Much better than the first few nights.

Recap:
Night 1 - no restart, no airplane mode - Battery dropped 40% in 8 hours
Night 2 - Airplane mode one - Battery dropped 10% in 8 hours
Night 3 - Restart before bed - Battery dropped 15% in 8 hours

So I can say that it's not the connection draining my battery overnight, but some app or system doing it.
Now the question is which app? I checked the battery usage and I can't find a rogue app. Most of the apps that are shown are apps that I do use frequently. The top app being ambient display.

I want to get a battery app, paid or free, to help me determine more on what is causing the drain, but I know that sometimes those app also cause battery drain. If there is an app people recommend, please let me know and/or if I should even get a battery monitoring app? I've use GSAM before, but never did find the information useful. Maybe Greenify to sleep the apps?

Also to note, I am using Nova launcher and I do not have my apps update automatically.

Thanks for all your suggestions

The ones you see high battery usuage try force stop them

Kind of the strange that if it is a rogue app, it would have drain the battery on WiFi also. Unless the rogue app only uses Mobile Data or something... which is very odd. I think 10% drain over 8 hours is not bad. Try turning off Always on Display and see if it changes anything. I had it off since day 1 and something I left my phone uncharged overnight and I lost about 4% to 5% in about 10 hours. I do have a pretty strong cell signal at home though.... -97 dBm.

Another thing you could try is to turn off Bluetooth. Putting the phone on airplane mode also turned off Bluetooth as well is Mobile. Maybe it is Bluetooth causing the battery drain? Although usually Bluetooth is super low battery usage even if it has an active connection.

Try seeing how much it drops from a full charge

I think he's going be ok after the restart now the adaptive battery has to learn the new habbit

When i first got my pixel 3 (non xl) i was using ambient display and experienced the same issue, not as drastic as 40% drop more along the lines of 15-20%. With that said, i have since then disabled ambient display (AOD) since it wasnt a fan of it.

You mention cell signal, however talking about using 10% overnight (in my case 6-7 hour) in airplane mode is out-of-line. When I got my Pixel 3a it used 1% overnight. With the same set of apps it has been steadily increasing, overnight, in airplane mode, equal to during the day not in airplane mode with light usage! Daytime battery performance, especially when using apps is excellent, like miraculously low battery usage. Just this weird night thing.

I don't use ambient display, I've turned off background processes on almost all apps, it makes no sense. My thought it that it may coincide with the June security patch, not sure. But it doesn't seem to be app related, and in April was only using 1%.

I'm also experiencing ~1% battery drain in airplane mode with my 3a. I've turned off digital wellbeing, wifi scanning, but still the same. I missed when only losing a few percent overnight. Haven't found a fix yet...

So I have changed the way I charge my phone, as I now charge it during the day while on my pixel stand at work.

Because of this, I no longer need to charge my phone over night. For the past 2 nights now, I have left my phone, on, with Do Not Disturbed set from 10pm-630am. I go to bed with about 70% battery, yet when I wake up, it's down to about 30%. A 40% drop in about 6 hours of the phone doing nothing. Is this normal? I do have adaptive brightness set and even though I do have Always on Display, once my lights turn off, the screen does go black.

Is there a deep sleep mode that I can place the phone in? Is this a normal drain?

Any help is appreciated
