Battery gets hot and dies rapidly after rooting to KaosFroyo 2.2

I rooted my Eris and installed KaosFroyo 2.2 a couple of weeks ago. I'm super impressed with the space savings that I gained and how much more quickly some apps run. However, my battery runs hot and usually will die after just a few hours of receiving a 100% charge. I don't remember it being this way for the first few days of updating, but perhaps I just didn't realize it immediately.

Obviously, something is very demanding on the processor and thus rapidly draining my battery. I have a task killer, but executing that doesn't seem to help the problem. Even when my phone is charging it doesn't get as hot as it does when it's just idling in my pocket.

Any ideas?

Settings->About Phone->Battery Use

What are the top two items listed? (Wait until after you've been unplugged for a little while.)

Also, settings->accounts & sync. Is the phone in a sync loop, where it is constantly syncing with your Google account?

Here's the problem with running ROM's that haven't been tested thoroughly and verified to be stable and safe.

Chances are the developer of that particular ROM has the processor overclocked to a speed that's not conducive with the Eris processor. The ROM you're running is for the Eris right?

If you can find a ROM that was built straight from Froyo source and is close to bone stock, that should fix the problem.

Kaos Froyo is a very popular and very stable ROM for the Eris that has been around for many, many months. It's clocked at 710/245, which is pretty much what all Eris ROMs are clocked at now (stock is 528 MHz.)

However, one more thing: the latest version of Kaos Froyo, V38, apparently has an issue for people with battery use that can be fixed by flashing Conap's CFS V8 kernel from Recovery.

Copy that .zip file to the top directory of your SD card - the same location where you copied the Kaos .zip file. Restart the phone in Recovery, go to the wipe menu and wipe Dalvik cache (do not wipe data/factory reset), go back to the main menu, go to the flash menu and flash the file DecafuctCFSv8.zip. Restart the phone and things should be better.

I've considered downgrading to 2.1 because of the battery issue, but the space savings that I have with 2.2 is ridiculous (an extra ~80mb). One of the biggest annoyances w/ 2.1 is constantly seeing the "Low disk space" icon in the notification bar, taunting and laughing at me every time I'd look at my screen.

Never mind this - since you mentioned it's Kaos and Kaos has the known kernel issue, it's probably that.

That's definitely not Conap's kernel. Either flash that over Kaos, as I mentioned earlier, or try another ROM.

Actually, there are a few 2.1 ROMs that will give you even more space than the Froyo ROMs will. xtrSENSE and xtrROM use a brilliant tactic called cache2cache that frees up a lot of memory. If you were running out of memory with stock Eris, you will be surprised to find that these ROMs leave you with well over 50 MB free. xtrSENSE looks just like stock Eris, including the Sense launcher; xtrROM removes the Sense launcher and replaces it with a third party home app called Launcher Pro. Both are great choices.

Yes. I believe that Kaos has his own kernel for Kaos Froyo, but Conap's CFS will work just fine flashed over Kaos Froyo.

Well, I'd love to flash Conap's but when I'm at the recovery menu, I can't scroll to any other options. I can click alright, but, unfortunately, the default selected option is "Reboot," which doesn't do me so good for flashing. Any ideas?

Alright, well I was able to successfully flash CELB after having some trackball issues in scrolling to "Flash zip" in the recovery menu, but I now notice that I need to install Google apps in order to restore my Market, etc. In trying to do so, obviously, I need to flash the zip, but again, I'm having scrolling issues. Wtf?

Battery life does seem to be better already, which I'm stoked about. It did delete Shazam, Google Voice, and probably some other apps that I've yet to discover are now missing.
