I keep hearing that charging overnight or keeping the battery charge at 100% for long periods of time is harmful to the battery. Fast charging is bad if done too often?

Lately, I have tried charging to near 100% and then just turning it off till morning.

What is the best way to keep a Pixel 2xl properly charged?

I have a landline, so I've always turned my phones off at night then charged them to 100% and unplugged them for the night. I also try and avoid running them way down if I don't have to. I've never had a battery fail on a phone, or even get weak enough to cause a problem.... and I keep my phones for years. The big swing from fully charged to almost empty every day combined with charging all night every night will shorten a batteries life substantially. Try topping up your battery during the day if possible versus running it dead ;-)

tl;dr Charge or turn off at 40%, stop charging at about 95%-98%. Leaving the charger plugged in all night is fine if the charger doesn't fail. If the charger (a little circuit inside the phone, what you plug into the wall is just a power supply) fails to stop charging at 100%, it will probably "cook" the electrolyte out of the battery, ruining it.

"Fast charging" is a bit of a misnomer. A lithium battery can safely be charged at 1C - in other words, if the battery is a 3520 mAh battery, it can safely be charged at 3520 mA (or 2.7 A). But 3525 mA is pushing the safety margin. Fast charging may get as high as about 2/3 of that amount, so it's as safe as a trickle charge.

I've always charged mine at 5% to 100 never had issues, now you don't want to let it completely deplete as this is definitely not good , but leaving on the charger overnight they automatically switch off at that point . Lithium ion battery life in cell phones is between 2 to 3 years from what I've read and then need replacing. But you need to to get battery down in 5% range to calibrate it once in awhile . I would do 20% to 95% should be ok and occasionally 5% to 95%.
