Battery life is actually really bad overall

This is a new replacement X from Motorola. I've had it about a month now.

As someone who works from home, I never paid much attention to the battery life discussions.

This past weekend, I forgot to take my car charger on a 1-day flight up to Northern California (flew back the same night). Man, I realized first hand this phone just does NOT last.

I used the phone a lot during the morning for everything from showing boarding passes, navigation, texting, emailing, etc. The battery was low within a few hours -- actually, the screen on time was around 1 hour 48 minutes.

Bump charged it to 98% while eating breakfast at Mimi's Cafe (thanks to Mimi's Cafe for the wall plug).

Battery low again within hours (not many). In the early afternoon, I had to start relying on my iPad to do in-car navigation & other tasks because I was afraid my phone would die.

That's when stuff looks bad for a product ... when you feel forced to use other equipment because the damn thing just can't handle the job. :'(

I'm a new 2014 Moto X owner, I've had my phone for two weeks now. I've seen multiple posts about the Moto X's bad battery life, but for me this just hasn't been the case. On weekdays when I'm being bombarded by emails, I get around 4 - 4.5 hours of SoT. On weekends when I'm not getting as many emails, I get around 5-6 hours SoT. Here's screenshots of my battery life from earlier today:

How? I could put up with some of the other flaws if I had that kind of battery life. I am trying one of those Battery Doctor apps, now. Too soon to tell if it is helping.

You need a battery replacement. There's a YouTube video on how to do it. You can buy the battery and tools for less than $20 on eBay.

I would get rid of that battery app. Battery saving apps are very ironic in that they use a lot of battery.

It was a brand new replacement from Motorola; so, I would grudgingly go through the hassle of talking to Motorola Support first. Thanks for the idea, though.

Didn't really notice any improvement. Uninstalled. Maybe I should have given it more than 1 day, though.

Battery saver apps don't work. I would install GSam which is a battery monitor and it can help you figure out of of what is eating your battery. If you are rooted, you can get even more from it. Also if you are rooted, Wake Lock Detector can give you a lot of info.

Was it a brand new phone or a refurbished?

When ordering the replacement, I asked the Moto rep multiple times -- he ensured me it was a new phone, not a refurb.

Maybe the battery was used. If so, I'm disappointed. I'll call Moto this week.

Thanks, I had forgotten about GSam. Hadn't needed it in a few years.

From my experience Moto only issues replacement phones with heavily used, toasted batteries. That could be the issue.

To be clear, you are saying that Moto is known to put used batteries in the replacement phones they say are "new phones?"

If true & had I known that, I would have just bought some other phone. Unreal.

Well, this phone is RMA. Last time, though, the Motorola rep repeatedly insisted they were sending a brand new phone. Today, this guy said they only ever send "like new" phones.

Lucky I have my X 2013 til I find something I want. Thanks for the input folks. :)

If you bought a brand new phone from Motorola it should be new, parts and all. However, if it's a replacement it will be a used phone.

I set Location to off. It's also very easy to tell what app is draining your battery, just look at your battery history. Perhaps you have a rogue app that's draining your battery, it's happened to me several times. A couple times my Calendar and Email locked up, killing my battery (and using up all my data).
