I'm new to smart phones and have only had my VM Optimus slider a week or so. So far battery life has been as expected, each charge lasting a day or more. Yesterday however, I had the phone in my pocket on standby the entire day with little usage and after 6 hours or so it gave me a battery low warning! Is this normal? Does body heat or lack of ventilation (inside clothing) affect battery life?

A big varible in smart phones, is making sure that your data connection along with all your location settings such as GPS etc is disabled. Start getting used to only have data on when using it or need it for other functions of the such as Navigation etc.
Disable that and you should see a huge gain in battery life.

Step 1: open the Battery Use graph and look for anything out of the ordinary. On any Android phone you should see "Cell Standby", "Wi-Fi", "Bluetooth", and "Phone Idle" at ~25% with some noise underneath.
If you're using the phone a lot, "Display" will start to creep up. If you're making phone calls, "Voice Calls" will register.
*Generally* an app should never show here at all. If it does, it's using too much juice (or you were playing a lot of Angry Birds...but even still "Display" will be higher).
Step 2: in Gingerbread you can click the line graph at the top of "Battery Use" for a more detailed look at usage. Again look for anything unusual. I recommend checking this daily so you get an idea of normal use. If you see a lot of "Awake" but without a lot of "Screen on" then you know it's a background app, for example.
Step 3: disable Bluetooth when you're not using it. You'll thank me later
