Battery Life Questions

So I've had the Optimus since early November, and my battery life has always been 'iffy'. I can't go more than 7 hours without charging. Other people (who are claiming similar activity levels) are stating they get 12 or even 20+. So I'm a bit confused as to what is the deal with mine.

I have email address linked and have a weatherbug app that updates every 4 hours. Those are my only constantly active things. I am not connected to Twitter or Facebook through their apps (use the browser). I tested last night by going to bed at 2am and left my fully charged (unplugged) phone on my nightstand. Awoke at 10am with 7% battery. What the hell?

When I check the usage statistics, here is what I get:

Cell Standby: 71%
Phone Idle: 21%
Android System: 7%
Display 4%

Anyone got any ideas??

Press Cell Standby when you are on this screen. This will show you Time Without Signal. Cell phones use a lot of power looking for signal when one is not available. Is this value high? My wife works in a hospital and she is going up and down the elevator quite a bit. Some days her battery would die completely in a 12 hour shift. She would also complain that her phone would get warm while she was in the elevator. At home, her battery lasts all day with 50-60 percent left. I installed a program NoBars on her phone. Since then she has not had a problem with battery even though her phone shows 70 percent TWS (although it has only been a week). It is supposed to put a notification when it turns off the phone, but I have not seen it yet. She may have erased the notification. The program can be set up to turn on the Airplane mode if you do not have a signal for a time period (30 sec to 5 minutes). It will then check for a signal every hour (or other interval). If it finds a signal, it turns off the Airplane mode. There seems to be a bug in the TWS calculation. There is another thread that discusses this. You should look that thread up.

My TWS is at 50%. Which seems ridiculous considering it is always showing me with 3G connection and I live 1/2 mile from I-25 in Denver Metro. I was advised to use the *#*#4636#*#* and it showed me as CDMA auto (PRL). I am assuming this TWS is what is causing the issue, but have no idea how to fix it. Very frustrating.

I just read last night about a bug of some sort that causes this erroneous 50% reading. I don't remember all the details but it's somewhere on this forum.

I checked my TWS last night and I was at 42%... and my battery was at 45% after 16 hours. If the phone is new you might try a couple full charge to full discharge cycles, if it still doesn't improve I think I'd take it back.

Your battery life doesn't line line up with what I'm experiencing at all.

Erase Battery Stats

Correct me if I am wrong, but we should probably only use the erase battery stats in the custom recovery after a full nights charge, going to a day without charging to optimize the battery.

I used to erase the stats every time I flashed a ROM on my Hero, and the battery indication was shoddy at best. It never showed me a good accounting of the battery until I optimized it, and chilled out on flashing for a couple days.

On a side note, I can use my Optimus for about 16 hours with semi-heavy use before it goes dead.

As for the erroneous 50% reading, on some other thread it was suggested that whenever you restart your phone, turn Airplane mode on then off as soon as you are able. This will prevent that from happening. What the bug is doing is somehow doubling the time unplugged for the cell standby calculation. For example, when pressing About Phone>Battery use, it will show you the time since you unplugged the phone (e.g. 2m 20s since unplugged). When you press Cell standby, the bug causes the Time on value to be double that, thus giving you a 50% TWS (e.g. for the above value, the Time on would read 4m 40s).

Any updates on battery life? I can't get my optimus to last more than 7 hours either...if i had the 16 hours of life that you all talk about i wouldn't have a damn complaint with this phone...

heres my set up:

rooted running TR1.5, Zefie's Kernal .05

OC to 806(i know that can kill some battery but really this much?)

ADW launcher EX

Minimal widgets (weather, clock, twitter, and some toggle)

I havn't seen much of a difference between my stock battery and my current set up this is why i think something is up.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

If im not mistaken ..oc wit the kernal is going to drain battery more. My phone isn't oc wit any kernal n get 12-16hrs of life .. however im using gingerbread theme n getting less life. Might go stock theme again.

are you running thunderom? I love the speed of my phone, but might have to revert back to get good battery life.

Anyone tried any after market batteries?

Yep using thunderom 1.5. Also have deluxe (jit /stagefright) active. Now nothing wrong wit having zefies kernal I had it but took it off just didn't really want. Still have avg quad scores at 1000 . Use launcherpro, adwlaunch, and ex. And my widgets r set to update at 15mins. I do keep screen brightness very low and have wifi set to always on. And I use gps number of hrs a day.

See thats absolutely crazy because your getting an extra 4-5 hours than mine and the only difference is the kernal... i havn't herd anyone else complain about the kernal causeing poor battery life tho..

When i go to the about section in the setttings and look at battery life this is what i get:

Android System: 44%
Cell Standby: 28%
Display: 18%
Phone idle: 7%
Handcent SMS: 2%
Android OS: 2%

any comparisons?

Rite now I have..
Unplugged: 4hrs 8mins
Battle life 85

Standby: 39%
Sys: 21%
Wifi: 13%
Dis: 11%
Geocache (gps): 11%
Idle: 5%

I have been txting but I use GO... have handcent but dnt use.

Cell standby 37%
Display 20%
Phone idle 5%

8hrs 15 minutes since unplugged, battery is at 48%. Moderate usage of browser and a couple short calls throughout the day. Imo I will easily make it 12+ hours on this charge. This is with thunderom, regular build prop, and oc to 768 max 245 min using set cpu on interactive

I used to have TERRIBLE battery life....no more than 8 hrs-ish.

Here's what fixed it:

Used the Power Control Widget on my home screen to shut off sync, backlight, (which I don't need unless it's really bright out), bluetooth, and GPS. WiFi is controlled by Modus Operandi, so it turns on when I get near my house and turns off when I leave.

I shut off all the crap widgets that were updating facebook, twitter, etc. constantly....I find it just as easy to do a manual refresh when I want to check any of them.

I've started leaving GPS on now, and not really noticed any decrease in batt life as long as I don't have some hungry app like lattitude running.

As of right now with some light phone calling, texting, browsing, etc. I'm at 83% with 7 hrs 31 min unplugged.

On a weekend day, when I spend hours browsing, (damn laptop took a crap on me), playing angry birds, (almost done the last chapter!!), etc., I still have 30-40% when I plug it in at night.

I'm running ThundeROM 1.5 with stagefright/JIT enabled, stock kernel, no OC.

I dont know how you guys have such awful battery life. Running stock with juicedefender my phones been unplugged for 30 hours with 34% battery left.

Try giving it a 100% charge and clearing the battery data and running it down to 0.

I think the "location" plugin just uses cell signals to get a general location... it draws a half mile circle around the general place I live... since I don't work or do shopping while I'm I'm this circle, that's good enough for me...

Sent from my Optimus S...excuse the spelling mistakrs

Just usage. 8 hours is about what I get when I have everything running (as in, nothing is turned off and I'm constantly using the phone). Going to minimal I could probably run the phone for a few days... though I wouldn't be able to do much with it to keep it running that long.
