Plugged in for 10 hours. Still only shows 94 percent. I guess I will have to hurry up and root it. Then it's time for a battery wipe

This is normal. It's so that the physical battery itself lasts longer by not charging fully.

Different kernels give you the option to change this.

Just about any of the new kernels in the last month or so will allow you to receive a full charge. Example, Matrix will give me 99% every time.. Otherwise there is that normal 94/95/96% cut off to preserve the battery with stock OS.

Epic charged all the way to 100 right out of the box. This was not meant as a complaint, just an observation.

Showing 100% on any ROM is just it's creator fudging the numbers. The Nexus S will not actually change to 100%, it's a hardware thing so get used to it.

And the Nexus charges to 94% right out of the box, by design.

The Nexus is not the Epic. Things are going to be different.

Of course things are different. Like I said, this was not meant as a complaint. It was just an observation.

If it's not a complaint, then what does it matter whether it says 94% or 100%? That in itself is no reason to root.

Why do people get so testy?

It was an inquiry, not a complaint.

Noticed this thing as well, Keith. I've learned that the numbers are mostly cosmetic. If you install franco's kernel and use NS Tools (from android market) you can change what number the phone charges to. By default, it is 96% in NS Tools, and if the kernel supports it, you can change it to 100%. I've used this strictly for battery calibrating (since the app recommends you charge to 100%).

But, as I said, I think it is cosmetic.

I've watched my phone on idle over the first two hours with franco, GLaDOS and matr1x kernels installed. After two hours, they are all at about 93-94% (on idle). Franco goes from 100%; GLaDOS from 96%.

Still get 12-14 hours heavy use and >24 hours light use out of the phone...

I root to load roms and have access to the system that you don't get stock. Doing the battery calibration is but a small part.
