I couldn't get this to work. I've enabled the always show this option in system UI tuner. Still it's not shown on the status bar. When I chose never show this option it goes away.
Is this a bug on pixel? O do have the latest update

Pull down the notification shade, press and hold the settings gear (I forget how long you have to hold, at least a few seconds). A wrench icon should appear next to the gear.

Tap the settings gear and scroll all the way down. Underneath developer options and above about phone, tap System UI Tuner.

Tap Status Bar.

Scroll down and tap Battery. A menu will pop up: Always show percentage, Show percentage when charging (default), and Don't show this icon. Tap Always show percentage.

There will now be a very tiny number INSIDE your battery icon. That number is your battery percentage.

Yes it's always been working. But it's dumb to put the numbers inside the icon. Last night when my battery was at 20% even though it was showing it, I couldn't see it!! It should be next to the icon so we can see it all the time.

Not possible with the stock settings. Was that way on the Nexus phones, too. Unless you want to grab a Battery app from the Play Store to put it in the left hand corner of your status bar, that's what you've got for battery percentage at the top. It's how it's been implemented.

I agree with this. I love having the numerical percent shown but would much rather it be next to the battery indicator.

Right, like when it is charging. I used it with the percentage in the icon for a while, but I have decided to go back to no number. I don't need to know the percentage at a glance, I always have battery to get through the day.
