Battery Query Please

I have had my Galaxy Tab S 10.5 for about a month. My battery seems to deplete very fast, about 10% every 30 minutes. I only use the tablet for reading books on Kindle, looking at my emails, and reading the news. The battery settings show that 57% is being used by the screen, 29% by Touchwiz, 5% by the Android System, and lesser amounts by other sources. I have my display settings set to Automatic Brightness and Adaptive Display.

I understood that I could expect about 8 hours battery life but I am lucky to get 5 hours. I have not watched videos or played games on the tablet as yet. I was wondering if this battery life is normal or should I be expecting more.

I usually start recharging once the battery shows around 30% and it then takes about 4 hours to charge to 100% again.

That does seem odd. Mine depletes about 10 to 15% a day in StandBy, but if I'm actively using it I can get up to 6 or 7 hours of screen-on time. It's usually enough for me to use it for e-mail, notes, documents, etc. for work and still have some battery left for book reading, music streaming, and some video by the end of the day.

The list doesn't seem odd, as screen usually does take a big chunk of battery. I'd suggest either factory-resetting your device to see if it helps, but also try using darker backgrounds when reading books. This is an AMOLED screen, the more black pixels you display, the less battery the screen uses (I read my books in 'night mode' using Play Books).

Also, are you using any other launchers? Nova perhaps? I once installed Nova on mine and the battery took a nose dive. Reverted to TouchWiz and battery was great again.

Thanks for your reply. No, I am not using any other launcher. I have just been through all the apps and turned off notifications for ones I do not need. I have also installed Startup Manager and disabled apps I do not use like Evernote, S Finder, etc. I will see if that helps.

The 'night mode' options sounds like a good idea. It is a shame the battery is an issue in what otherwise is an excellent tablet. It seems I could not use it for more than 4 or 5 hours away from a charger. And if I used it for video of games maybe a lot less.

It might be a bad tablet too if factory reset doesn't help... Again, mine can go all day long with games, e-mails, documents and not necessarily on night mode. Night mode only helps run longer, but I can still use the tablet for at least a full day.

Unfortunately, yes. Factory resetting your device clears it entirely, so anything you downloaded and didn't back up, is gone. :(

Move your stuff to the SD card, you won't lose what is there. The app downloads is fairly automatic so isn't a big deal.

Game saves and some app settings are the things that I miss when I format my device. Android should really step it up and create a non-rooted solution for device backups, just like iOS. That is one thing I do like about those Apple devices. Plug in, back up, restore to ANY device, done. Apps, settings, game saves...it's all there! Closest thing I've seen for Android is the poorly-done Samsung Kies, and that only lets you restore to the same exact device. Got the same model for warranty replacement? Sorry! No can do! No restore for you, you switched phones! .... Stoopid...

I've used Helium successfully on many different devices without being rooted.

I had the same issue. Wiping my tablet did not work. I returned it and got a new one and I have not had a bad battery since. Unfortunately, and I do not know why, but I think you got a bad unit like I had.

Luckily i followed suggestions on here and disabled notifications on most of my apps, disabled adaptive display and auto-brightness and now get a full day of battery. that is just using it for reading on Kindle, email, and light net surfing, but still much more than I previously got. Thanks to all of your suggestions. I guess I am happy with this, unless of course you guys get a full day with intensive use?

You should be getting 8-9 sot. Samsung has had faulty batteries in a number of units but of course they wont admit it. If you call them theyll act like its the first time their hearing about it. I sent mine in for it to come back even worse but yet they said it was fine. I changed the battery out myself and now I get great battery life to the point I don't even pay attention to it.
