Battery screenshot question

So I looked at my battery stats and was wondering under mobile network signal what do the black spaces mean? I know my battery life could be better but that's most likely due to poor to moderate signal throughout the day.. Do the black spaces indicate periods of time without signal at all cause while I'm using the phone I myself have never experienced loss of signal completely that I'm aware of..

Those black spaces just indicate times when data wasn't being sent or received.

you might or might not have had signal during this periods of time, but the meaning is just no data sent at those moments
