PSA (Pixel Snafu Advisory): June 2024 Update Battery Issue

There have been a number of reports regarding battery drain issues on Pixel devices after installing the June 2024 update. Not everyone is reporting it, but enough are to be aware that it is a possible issue that you may experience after updating your device.

This appears to have happened to my Pixel 8 Pro after I updated it. While my determination of faster battery drain was/is anecdotal (no scientific tools were used to measure battery drain) , I believe that I have had the device long enough to have a fairly good idea of how quickly my P8P's battery drains under the various situations I use it in.

In an attempt to rectify the battery drain issue, I tried a number of setting changes, multiple restarts, etc. What actually worked for me was changing the Preferred Network Settings from 5G to 4G/LTE. The difference is/was like "night and day" and my battery life now seems even better than before the June update (when I was occasionally using 4G/LTE). Fortunately (or is it unfortunately) for me, the Telus 5G signal where I live is pretty poor and unreliable anyway, and I had no good reason not to change to 4G/LTE (obviously, your situation may be different than mine).

Anyway, if you DO encounter a battery drain issue after updating your device, this is something you can try to see if it also works for you.

I live in Birmingham AL and I've recently spent weeks in Chicago and Austin. Honestly, 5G isn't impressive anywhere I go.

I'm on a Public Mobile 4G/LTE plan which runs on Telus' network. I have noticed a slight improvement in battery life since the June update. Granted I'm using a regular P8 and not the Pro. Before Public mobile I was on a Rogers 5G plan and I didn't notice any degradation in real world speed when I switched to Public Mobile 4G. 5G seems like a kind of a gimmick in my opinion. I don't miss it. And I definitely don't miss the higher bill payments for my old Rogers plan!

Hi - I have noticed what seems to be a slight reduction in battery performance. I have 8 unlocked on AT&T - I don't subscribe to 5G service so I can't test the changing preference fix.

Wonder if it has anything to do with what I posted here , maybe why T-Mobile was late with June's update

Nice to hear that not everybody has experienced a battery issue with the update. It would be helpful (at least to me) to know if you are using 5G. In my case, I no longer had, and still don't have, an issue with battery draining more quickly after switching from 5G to 4G/LTE. Would you be so kind as to let us know if you are using 4G/LTE or 5G? TIA.

Interesting stuff when two or more users have the same phone model and Android version (and sometimes even the same carrier) and one has an issue and the other doesn't.

When I worked on computers back in the "olden days," a fair share of the issues I encountered were various software titles not playing nice with one another, with Microsoft often being one of the primary antagonists. I guess it should have been obvious that today's mini, all-in-one computers (mobile devices) would have some of the same issues, even if Google has more control over the ecosystem than Microsoft had. Or does someone else have another explanation as to why two identical phones with the same Android version would have different results after a system update?

5G on T-Mobile. My 5G signal is very strong in my neighborhood.
