battery tips for the bionic

Tip #1: Extended battery.
Tip #2: Make sure email ect is set to a longer update rate. I use an hour. You can manual update any time you need to.
Tip #3: Charge whenever you can.

Also remember this. People don't buy a high end exotic sports car and then whine about fuel economy. If you want a phone that lasts days and days get a jitterbug. IMHO

Trololololol

No, I am not a troll. I really liked the phone and miss it, I just couldn't get through the day on a charge. Got almost 10 hours on my last day and that is with 4g off, that is not what I want in a 4g phone.

"Return it" is a simple answer. Just like "Google it." Best thing to do is get an extended battery when they're available

I did get the extended battery and yes it helps but the battery drain is a great constant.

Tip #1: Extended battery. I got one, it adds time and bulk so it's kind of a trade off.
Tip #2: Make sure email ect is set to a longer update rate. I use an hour. You can manual update any time you need to. Sorry but push email is the standard and if I wanted to click the "you've got mail" icon I would still have AOL
Tip #3: Charge whenever you can. I always bump charge when I can but there are times when you can't

the sports car isn't bad on gas, the escalade is. Not trying to be a jerk here but I did try to get make this phone work. If it can ever make a day on a charge I will get it again. I should also apologize, my first post was meant to be tongue in cheek and not nasty. The only reason I returned the Bionic is the 14 day costco limit, if the limit was 30 days I would still be trying to work through this. I just ran out of time.

Power Control--my most used widget as it is the only one to turn off the GPS from the widget that I have found. It should be in your widget list.

Widgetsoid will also toggle GPS. I love it because you can combine many functions into one small widget, and you can even create a widget with your most frequently used toggles that appears in the notification bar.

I've been using the power control widget to control my battery usage, and then Juice Defender to turn on and off the data radios when not in use. I have a ton of stuff running, so I'm getting like 9 hours of battery life on a charge. I guess if I had less things running at a time, maybe I'd be able to leave my data on more often. But emails aren't as important to me, if I want them, I'll turn the data back on and manually update it...but I'm waiting on my extended battery to come in the mail, so when I get that I plan on disabling Juice Defender.
Biggest usage: 4G. Turn it off when you're not using it, it just eats battery like candy.

my battery life is 9 hours, give or take. I'm in 4G all day. i shut off all non essentials, like wifi, gps, etc.

Today, I had 9hrs on it and was only down to 50% with normal usage. Juice defender works great but I also have 4G turned off and screen brightness turned down all the way. I should be getting my extended battery tomorrow, I think I'd could push 24hrs+ with it.:D

To your defense then it is a good decision to return it and get your upgrade back. I know that battery issues with these phones can be a pain in the ass but its a trade off I guess. I am sure that in the coming months or year 4G radios will work better and use less battery and the battery tech will be better but now we have to live with what we got.

To save battery I found these help:

  1. Turn off WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS When Not Connected or in Use.
  2. Turn off Cell Data when Connected to WiFi (I have Data Enabler Widget for this)
  3. Keep Apps Like Facebook, Google+, Maps, VZNav etc in an Auto End List in Moto Task Manager
  4. Set Email/Social Network Sync Times for Longer Periods
  5. Set Backlight Timeout to 15 or 30 Seconds (Default is 1 min)
  6. Make Sure to Keep Clicking "Back" When You Want to Go Exit an App. Clicking Home Will Keep it Running While Back Will Close

Honestly, I have had great luck with this phones battery life and I couldn't be happier with this phone. One thing that I did notice above anything else is that when you are connected to WiFi and have Cell Data on, battery will drain slightly quicker than if you just on Cell Data.

Honestly its not that bad advice to return it. If someone can't stand the battery life then why keep it and waste an upgrade especially for a $300 upgrade phone. Personally I believe that if you buy an Android phone and expect good battery life, doesn't matter what model, you are naive. Don't believe what manufacturers will tell you or Verizon themselves about battery life. Everyone will experience different battery life depending on use.

That is why Verizon has a 14 day period you can return. Out of every Android phone I have had the battery life has been from pitiful to okay only. If you don't want to add bulk with an extended battery then you need to live with the fact, at least for now, that battery life will not the star feature of this phone or any Droid phone in general.

I don't want to come off as a dick but every reviewer views battery life as a negative, its just the degree as to how bad. What phone are they comparing it to? Of course the iPhone which I can personally attest to has great battery life for a smartphone. However that comes with a trade off, you don't get the power and capabilities of the Android OS.

I am sure the OP knows he can return it if he chose too but he came in for tips on how to prolong battery life, returning is is not a tip.

Get an app. like Juice Defender. It has supposedly increased my battery life by x1.40.

Go into Task Manager and setup your auto-end list. I have things like Maps, slacker, social location, vz navigator, google+, facebook on my list. 2 minutes after your screen goes off those apps will be killed.

Turn your brightness down as low as possible while still being able to comfortably see the screen.

Avoid using Active Wallpapers.

Turn off 4G when not using it. Go into Wireless & Network Settings > Mobile Network > Network Mode and select CDMA only.

This is a great list.

I do most of these things. On regular battery I found Juice Defender helped. I ended up picking up extended battery when it was 50% off and I like it (although I like a thinner phone, it's not unbearable). I just re-installed Juice Defender and am running it with the extended battery to see what my life is then (without JD and on extended battery with 4G on all day I could go 7 am - 11 pm without needing a recharge with ~ 2 hrs screen usage [some texting, apps, etc.]).

I opted for the Extended battery because I wanted to be able to leave on 4G the entire day. I probably could turn it off at work and not be an issue.

One trick for LTE on/off - download the free app LTE switch and throw it on your homescreen. It's not as good of a widget yet, but it at least is a shortcut to the menu to turn 4G on/off.

Ok no one is here to debate that, we are only looking for tips for improvement on battery life. WE ARE NOT looking to return the device or purchasing a jitterbug. The sports car analogy was terrible.

Not trying to be rude, sorry if it came off that way.
I guess what I was trying to get across was the cool stuff comes at a price.
Everyone wants:
4g
Dual core
Bright display
Bells and whistles
Thin
Light
24 hour battery
And want it at $199
Me to!!
Problem is the technology isn't there yet.
again, sorry if I offended. I was just trying to add a reality check.

I want to repost a question that was asked here..

Does anyone know if putting apps with data push in the auto-end list will stop it from syncing as well? For instance, I want to put facebook and gmail on the auto-end but I don't want it to stop updating notifications.

I find I am getting good battery life without doing anything special.

With moderate use I can go all day on it without any issues.

The reason the IPhone lasts longer is because it's so locked down. The screen is small, it doesnt allow you to run widgets or many of the apps we can run. Jobs knows what's he doing - he built a phone for the masses - but if you don't want a locked down boring phone you get Android.

My OG Droid was getting almost no battery time left at the end. Now I get get an easy 9 hours and still have plenty of power left.

I use it for 4 emails accounts (k-9 mail) that sync at different intervals. I text, use EBuddy all day, talk for 1/2 hour to an hour a day. Words with friends is always running.

One thing that confuses me - I work in an office so for a couple of bucks I bought a 10 foot cable and plug. So when I'm not using it it's plugged in. Why is that so hard? At home I have the same setup in my home office and a dock in the bedroom.

This is a high end phone that runs on rechargeable batteries - what kind of time to you expect on it without strapping a battery pack around your waist?

Maybe in a few years we will have better battery tech but for now I'm pretty impressed.

I have no urge to bulk up with the extended battery but I suppose if I was not able to re-charge so easily and used it more I'd buy one.

By the way, generally Task Killers are worse than not using them. The issue is the task will restart automatically and the task killer will just keep killing it. This will drain your phone faster.

Right now after 4 hours of very light use I have 83% left.

Cell Standby is 47% - Time without signal 88%
WiFi - 25%
Idle - 21%
Display 5%
Android OS - 3%

Also I leave Wi-Fi on all the time - I have high speed at home and at the office. I also leave 4g on all the time.

At my house I get barely any signal so without wi-fi I can't operate.

gps can significantly drain the battery, but since i have no running apps requiring gps it doesnt ever even show up. The only data i sync is ny gmail account. Biggest drains are the signal/standby using 70+ %.

So far im scratching 10hrs with moderate use. I have owned all 4 lte devices. The bionic is by far my fav followed by the charge. Before my charge was smashed I owned a TB and the wife has the LG. The bionics battery is on par maybe a little less than the charge. But even though its battery is slightly bigger it has a. 2nd 1ghz processor too. I believe its the best u can get at the moment from VZW.

How do you guys know what percentage is left in the battery more accurately than 10% intervals?

Not sure on Facebook, but it definitely still works for gmail. I tested it out just to make sure.
