Before I root...

... is backing up my apps necessary? I have two apps from the Amazon Apps store that I downloaded, and the rest are from the Market. The two apps from the Amazon Apps store are both free, but only because they are special offers. I don't want to have to re-download them and pay for those once-free apps.

If backing up the TB is necessary, how do I back them up before staring the root process? Titanium Backup? Or some other app?

TIA!

It would depend on the circumstances behind the free apps. Are they free until the end of the month or can you only download them once? I don't think TB will work unless you are rooted but I am sure there are backup apps out there that will. Your google account will remember any apps you paid for from the market. All others, unless backed up, would need to be re-downloaded.

Hope this helps.

Check it out...

It looks like Astro can backup and restore the apps. Has anyone tried that? The (now) four apps I downloaded from Amazon's app store are all free for a very limited time, so downloading them again will incur a cost. However, it appears that Amazon has the ability to back up the apps I already downloaded, so it looks like I don't have to pay again.

Thanks for your advice! More advice/experiences is also always appreciated, as I am a total Android noob.

-Google(Market) will only backup your paid apps.. no data/personal settings. Free apps will have to be downloaded again.
-Astro File Manager will backup your apps/apk's to the SD Card... no data/personal settings.
-Titanium Backup Pro will back up all apps with their data/personal settings to the SD Card. It will also restore app market links.

Another option is MyBackup Pro.. can be used for rooted and unrooted phones.

Thumbs up for Titanium Backup Pro.

Thanks! Does any method I use to root the phone involve getting the phone wiped? Or will the previous data be preserved once rooting is done?

Unfortunately the current method to root the Thunderbolt wipes the device. No way around it

Normally rooting does not involve wiping the phones data. Because of the method involved for rooting the Thunderbolt requires you to downgrade the rom.. you need to wipe the device. Downgrading the rom is the only option available right now to gain root access. Normally rooting does not involve wiping the device... only when switching roms. Until we have a different method of rooting which we can install on the current version of the rom, we need to downgrade and wipe the data.

You can use MyBackup Pro to back up your phone... (the app does not require root access) before you root. Once rooted and you restore everything with MyBackup... you can switch over to Titanium and use that as a backup.. titanium requires root access.

After reading about root methods for other Android smartphones, I find it somewhat odd that the TB requires a wipe of the data for root access. Do you think that the TB will eventually be able to be rooted without requiring the data to be wiped due to the flashing of a different rom? That would be an ideal situation for me, and I'd be willing to wait for that method, but if it's going to be a really long time coming, then I might as well use the root methods we have now.

It's because of the method used. Right now the only way to get root is to flash an older firmware version and then update back to the stock version to get s-off. I'm sure they'll eventually figure out a way to get the current version rooted but those not wanting a data wipe are out of luck.

Yea... Unrevoked usually puts out One Click root methods. When will they have one availabe?...who knows.. hopefully soon.. I'm sure they're working on it. Its still early, the phones only been out for two weeks now.

After much deliberation with myself, I finally decided to take the plunge and root. I backed up the apps using Astro and everything else (except contacts and Gmail-related stuff) with Mybackup. Rooted the device, then logged into my Google account to download the contacts, re-downloaded Astro, restored the apps, created a blank scene for the homescreen, ran Mybackup, restored the settings, and I was right back where I left off just before root! I had to remove and reinstall two widgets (Pandora and TWC), manually set a few things like tactile feedback while typing, but the whole thing was largely painless.

Thanks for all your advice and help!

can someone do a quick rundown of how flashing a new rom/kernel works?

im already rooted with ADB which was easy because i just followed all the directions.

im now looking into other roms but i dont want to loose all my settings or apps. im sort of confused on how CWM and Ti backup works even though i have both of them.

heres a couple questions i have + what i already understand:

so if i want to DL a new rom, most can be found in CWM and its as easy as clicking one and letting the phone do its thing.

right now CWM is missing something for the TB so i will need to flash my own kernel?

how does Ti backup actually work? i already have it set up to do a full backup twice a week but will this backup all my settings as well? (ie stock mail app settings, application settings, ect.) does this get reflashed after you update your rom to basically put all your apps/settings back?

i basically want to load the Das BAMF rom and flash the new OC kernel. so do i download the 1.1 version to my SD card (i assume because its not in the rom manager list of roms) and then flash it? then i flash the OC kernel over that?

as soon as i can get this process down once ill be fine but this is all a new cup of tea for me so i iz teh n00b.

TIA
