Before you root, you better read this thread

I think you're overestimating how many people root. Basing the popularity of rooting on internet forums is not going to be an accurate representation of the totals. If I asked 100 random people on the street if their phone was rooted, I doubt more than 5 would even know what that meant.

then whats the problem? you are saying it is affecting the network? if you have 1000 ppl with a 100 dollar bill, thats 100000 dollars....so no its not far fetched, im sure there are 10000 rooted people in the united states with rooted phones on vzw. the guy said they will ban rooted users from the network...

These two should NEVER be in the same sentence lol

lol Well, my girl might beg to differ. But I get your point. I go to them for operational questions...but when it comes to the tech they come to me.

I don't work for Verizon =)

First and foremost, I'm saying it's stealing. Secondly, any extra data usage is going to affect the overall network performance so even though rooting isn't all that common in the big picture, it's still additional load on the network.

How does rooting add more load to the network? I'm betting the majority of rooters aren't wifi tethering.

then what is your definition of unlimited data? please enlighten me. i understand they say tethering is illegal, hell ive tethered twice in my life. but i think its wrong i have to pay 30 a month for unlimited but then they want 20 more for like 4gb to have a "mobile hotspot"

apparently, his definition of rooting is different. i did it to get rid of the crap i dont want on my phone. tethering is the last thing on my mind. 3g is not fast enough to tether, i only tether if there is no internet available for me.

Agreed. I think more and more people are getting tempted lately with the benefits of rooting. People wanting to get rid of bloatware, lack of updates (see Fascinate), etc. But most of those aren't going to be using their phone as a dedicated internet replacement which is already prohibited in the TOS anyways.

There are so many benefits to rooting. Off topic, paid my bill, had several hundred unused minutes I bought ...Verizon took them back! Dang it!

come on guy, really? Unlimited data means unlimited for your use. A mobile hotspot means that you could give multiple people unlimited data. They have every right to charge for that.

This is straight up corporate greed. I root so that I can overclock my phone and remove all the trash they throw onto MY phone. I have tethered maybe 3 times ever. I don't replace my home internet connection with it. If this does happen, and Android becomes restricted, then I'll just head on over to the iPhone, because lets face it, Apple does closed and restricted better than anyone.

I'm willing to bet that the average person is not going to be effected by this. It's the people that are illegally tethering massive amounts of data that are going to be banned from the network. It's not in VZW's best interest to ban average joes that have rooted to put ROMs on. Maybe if you try to make a warranty claim they will see if you are in their "rooted database" and deny you. But I doubt they will be mass banning.

most of us could determine in less than a minute if someone has rooted their phones

Yeah right, heck half the Verizon employees I have talked to including tech support didn't even know that the Thunderbolt could talk and surf at the same time.

Here is what I think will happen.

First, rooting is legal.
Second, Android is an "open" system. Tethering is cooked into the source to begin with. Carriers remove it and charge for it to make another nickel on my unlimited plan.

I think they will target the top 5% of data users. If you not in the top 5%, I don't think anything will happen.

I know for a fact that my rooted, custom rommed Thunderbolt is running silky smooth. Much better than when I took it from the store. Maybe the Carriers and Manufacturers should take some of the mods and incorporate them. Then maybe there wouldn't be so much hacking.

Exactly ^....phones are becoming what laptops are when you buy one in a store...bloated as hell with all their corporate crap. Stop putting ads and bloatware on my phone...thats the primary reason most of us root besides tethering...

no, im talking unlimited for me. not a mobile hotspot for everyone else. so therefore it should be unlimited data for me.

I don't care about tethering. I do it to get rid of bloatware and to have the ability to make backups of app data. I like being able to take screenshots too. I loaded a couple of ROMs on my last phone (DInc), but now have the Tbolt and am gonna stick with Sense 2.0 for the foreseeable future.

It is unlimited data for you. Tethering to a laptop and then having unlimited data is a whole other matter. Considering that Verizon charges up to 80 dollars a month for laptop data plans, do you really expect them to allow you to do it for free?

This is exactly why we're getting tiered data plans. Too many people trying to cheat the system.

who gives a **** how i use my unlimited data. i pay for it. i pay for minutes and i dont get to use them. do you work for verizon or something? its not cheating the system, its getting what i pay for.

edit, btw it is DATA that tethers from my phone to my laptop.

Verizon does. Wouldn't it be a great world if we all decided how much were had to pay for everything and what that entitled us to?

maybe we should all start charging verizon for the space they are using on OUR phones, I will lease that space to them monthly so they can keep their advertisement stuff on it.
