Benefits of Time of Flight Sensor

I currently own the Note 9 and am trying to decide between upgrading to the Note 10 or 10 plus. Of course, one thing that is missing on the smaller 10 is the TOF sensor, and I seem to be finding conflicting information about what it truly provides. Some seem to suggest the main benefit is the 3D scanning, which is not something I care for. Others suggest it also improves portrait mode, which is something I like to take advantage of. Any thoughts (on these or other benefits)?

Good info in the article. I wish I could find an comparison of any actual difference between the Note 10 and 10 plus in the quality of portrait photos in practice.
