Android Central Question

I like ES file explorer - but always had nagging concerns, about it.

Due to it's removal from the play store.

I would like to explore other top tier, full featured, yet free, alternatives.

Is there a file mgr on par with ES?

What was it about ES that you liked? Many of us will not have used it, and cannot therefore know what you want.

When I dropped ES after DU Charge Booster started coming with it I switched to Solid Explorer. Solid may not be free, but I feel like it was worth the small cost.

Solid Explorer (14 day trial) - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.solidexplorer2

Same here, but I just went with my OEM file manager instead. Most phones come with a decent file manager now.

To the OP: Does yours not have one or is it lacking a feature you want?

Welcome to Android Central! Total Commander all the way. It's free and ad-free. (Be aware that even though the Play Store says it contains ads, it's only because the menu has a link for the various free plug-ins the developer offers on the Play Store.)

Yeah I must have used ES in the good ol' days, no ads, that I can remember and now add-on crapware. I think I dropped it when I upgraded devices. Since then I've just been using the stock file manager.

Needs to be noted that while Solid File Explorer is quite capable and feature-rich with extensive features, it's only free for a two-week trial period. It's only two dollars so worth the expense but the OP did request 'free' solutions.
At one time, ES File Explorer was a really good file manager app, highly touted as one of the best file managers. Then it was bought up, by a company based in China, and the app was still a good file manager but with a lot of data mining added in. So remove ES if you still have it on your phone, it's now a privacy weak point. But while all that ES drama was going on, since that time there's been a lot of really good alternatives being developed. A lot of them are 'pay-for' apps though. Some file manager apps are more basic, working only locally (limited to the internal storage and microSD card). Some, like ES, also include some really handy networking support. Since there was no mention of just which features about ES you consider to be important (user interface? SMB support? FTP support?) this makes it more of a problem for actual, relevant suggestions.
