Best Buy Price Matching Success

I'm sure that this idea has been posted, but wanted to post my success story. I ordered a 16 GB white Nexus 5 from Google Play. Order status stated that it would leave the warehouse on December 3rd. Went to Best Buy on a whim and asked about buying the phone without activation and if they could price match to $349 since that's what it sells for at Google Play. They originally wanted to tell me they couldn't sell me a Sprint phone without activation. They also tried to say the phone was locked and wouldn't work with my carrier. However, I talked to the 'Mobile Manager' who was able to process the deal and sell me the phone, today, at $349. I cancelled my Google Play store order, saving the shipping cost and the wait time. Highly recommend trying this if you're professional, communicate well, and lucky enough to get the right person, they can make it happen. The downside is I had to get black, because they did not have white in stock.

Wow, congrats! I think yours is the first success story I've heard trying to get BB to price match on the N5, or even sell it without contract for the matter. Enjoy!

I got mine in the first wave...but I was wondering why anyone couldn't do this. My wife said they might require it to be a B&M. What did you need to show them? Your receipt or just the sale price at the Play store?

If its just the Play Store they are going to be doing a lot of price matching...:D

Best Buy matches the prices of online retailers as well. I've had my local Best Buy price-match Amazon on several occasions.

I showed the Play Store. Of course, currently the black 16 GB phone is out of stock. I didn't mention that, I literally pulled up the Play Store on my phone and had the 16 GB white phone selected so that the price would be shown. The key for me was to be courteous, and unequivocally act like you knew what you wanted. I was out of the store in 10 minutes. The folks on the sales floor basically were telling me what I was trying to do wouldn't work. They didn't even want to sell me the phone without activation, and said I would have to do it from BestBuy.com instead. I thanked them for their time and was about to head out the door, tail tucked and wait for the Play Store order. However, one of the sales floor folks was kind enough to stop me as I walked out and said that if I wanted I could talk to the "Mobile Manager" about it. I sure am glad that I did.

Several people have reported that Best Buy doesn't price match prices of mobile phones. Now, that could be limited to on-contract prices versus no-contract prices. Good job on getting the device at the Play Store price and sharing with us. A bit of professionalism and patience can go a long way with the right person. Just a bit of advice for anyone looking to get a Best Buy representative to price match the device. :)

Good job. Ive never been able to get best buy to price match on a phone.

I purchased my nexus 5 on Friday the 8th from best buy off contract using it on att. After a lot of back forth with the manager and the 4 bored associates who all insisted you can't use a CDMA device on att I said I understand that but the phone has multiple bands and supports att LTE and voice. After my convincing they sold me the device. I was just happy enough they would actually sell it as my local best buy usually never sells new phones off contract on release day.

Bravo

They told me that after Sept. 1st they no longer match online deals in the phone department... Just came from there trying to get them to match AT&T's online price...

G...

I've been able to get them to match Amazon on anything. But for mobile phones, I couldn't get them to budge at all. Just my experience. It's a shame that it's inconsistent at different locations. I mean just have a clear stance on price matching for your products so customers aren't frustrated or have to go through a "song and dance" with the store associates.

From what I've read, some Best Buy stores issued notices to not match prices with the Play Store.

Also, something to consider is that by buying from a source other than the Play Store, warranty issues outside of the return period will be harder to deal with. Just an FYI.

I got my Nexus 5 last Wednesday from Best Buy and they price-matched the Play Store. I felt like I made out like a fat rat because I got the price AND didn't have to wait until whenever for Google to get them back in stock, then ship it to me.

Why do you say that? The warranty is through LG not Google.

Bestbuy tried to get me to activate it too. I told them they were wrong because it's off contact and eventually got them to sell it to me. I didn't mind paying a little extra because I was switching to TMobile and my att bill was about to renew. So having the phone right away rather than waiting saved me money.

Best buy doesn't like to sell phones without contracts, less profitable for them.

Bought one from a Best Buy in Baltimore, MD yesterday for $349 after they price matched the Google Play Store. Literally had zero issues. I asked, referenced their site says "contract" phones can't be matched, and he got approval from his manager 2-3 minutes later.
