I just went into my local Best Buy to check out the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. They only had the 6 on display. My initial impression is that the screen was very dim on it even with the brightness cranked all the way up. Very disappointing in my opinion.

I also checked out the Tab S7 which I'm almost certain I'm going to get myself for Christmas as it's right in my price range and I have the S21 Ultra. Compared to the Tab S6 lite, it was night and day.

But my initial reaction to the 6 was not very good. I remember going there and looking at the Pixel 5 and being tempted by it. That screen looked way better than the 6 imo. I really wish they'd had the 6 pro to compare them side by side. I know the screen on it gets brighter, although not as much as my Ultra.

I can't speak for the pixel 6, but the 6 pro gets very bright outdoors. I use it on my walks everyday outdoors and by far the brightness pixel I have ever owned all the XL models since the pixel 1 and even the pixel 5 last year. Thanks. That seems acceptable. The numbers on the 6 are almost half of what my S21 Ultra can do.

I definitely agree with being the brightest pixel of any I've ever had and definitely more than enough for my viewing pleasure outdoors in the direct sunlight

S21 Ultra peaks at auto brightness at about 1023 nits, so the difference might not be as stark as you anticipate. It's more directly comparable to the S21+ 5g, running only about 2.5% fewer nits as measured at peak a only a bit (2.5%) behind the S21+ 5G.

In the past, I always had to put brightness all the way just to equal a Samsung or oneplus at half brightness. Dim screens is a pixel thing. But I can't speak about the P6 or pro since I don't own one of those, yet anyway.
