I have a gmail account and am fine using the stock email app, but my wife has a Hotmail account and I was wondering which was the best app to use for that?

I have read different places that hotmail now supports IMAP, but I could never get it to work on the laptop using Thunderbird so always had to set it up with POP3.

Does anyone have a Hotmail account setup, using IMAP, on the Xoom or any android device?

Yes I know you can setup a gmail account and have the Hotmail emails set to auto-forward (that's what I do with all my old @hotmail stuff) but she "doesn't want to do that."

Most email clients will set you up through pop3 for hotmail. Microsoft charges for the activesync/imap stuff (a lot) so people tend to shy away. I have a hotmail account in my mix and have tried it on the stock email, k-9 and maildroid. So far I am on maildroid and it is working well. Stock was marking some emails (on other accounts) as already read so i moved to K-9 K-9 did everything i wanted, but the universal inbox was taking around 10 seconds to get all of its info before i could use it (With one email account, or avoiding the universal inbox it was good). The only issue with Hotmail and Maildroid i have is that it is pop and sometimes marks things unread again if i just go in quickly and exit.

So if I just set her email up by itself in one of the two (and left mine in the stock Gmail) I am guessing your recommendation would be to try K9 first?

I would say try k-9 first. Both are free, but Maildroid has advertising on the free one. k-9 has more customizability, but you might not need / use it. I think for k-9 you have to google the proper sellings m.live.com for the server etc. maildrois will auto setup with just the email and password. you could put both on and try them side by side for a while...

Actually you can use any hotmail account with ms exchange. You get your email pushed not pulled and also get your contacts and calendar synced. Microsoft has had this enabled for several months.
The server is:
m. hotmail. com
Domain is your email address
Password is your password

The stock email app works great for this setup.

Thanks for the head's up.

I got to playing with it tonight and realized there are separate "gmail" and "email" apps. The email app loaded up her hotmail account just fine.
