Best free open source media player

What is the best open source or totally free music player for android? I'm particularly interested in the best audio quality.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Best open source or totally free music player

I think sound quality has more to do with the device hardware and firmware, rather than the individual music player app.

Before I switched over completely to Google Play Music, I used to use MortPlayer Music, which is a nice free player that organizes music based on folder, not ID3 tags.

Thanks for replying. Yeah, I'm sure you're right, plus sound quality depends on the type of file being played (mp3s being far from Hi-Fi).

The open source players that I've tried thus far use the same codec as the native android player uses which I think make them all sound alike with what I would describe as thin audio. Some of the paid players and ad-supported players have their own codecs and have richer sound. I wonder if there are any open source or totally free players that have their own codecs?

I will try out MortPlayer Music. Thanks for the tip!

Have you tried Poweramp?

I have no doubt that Poweramp is a great and perhaps the greatest player for Android, but Poweramp is not open source nor is it free.
