Best messaging app for android

You can actually send a note via Duo: https://support.google.com/duo/answer/7660538?co=GENIE.Platform=Android&hl=en. Google's added a lot of functionality to Duo lately (and, typical of Google, Duo is supposedly going to be replaced by Google Meet at some point: https://9to5google.com/2020/08/14/sources-google-meet-replaces-duo/)

OK good to know. I can't keep up with Google... Google+, Google Talk, Google Hangouts, Google Duo... and now Google Meet?? I'll stick with Whatsapp for now lol.

Thank you everyone. I appreciate it. I am going to look into these. Going to see if my parents are willing to download something separately. I may have to wait until I see them again and do it myself on their phones lol. We live about 5 hours apart.

I think she is talking about video attachments in Verizon Messaging and how lousy they look with the compression... unless Verizon's messaging does include video chat... You never know with Verizon they way they modify their messaging apps all the time.

Duo is video chatting only so not a texting app sub. Whatsapp btw you can switch to video chat within the app if you want that added convenience as well as switch to calling the person within the app.
I've texted with Duo

Dude, that's a teenager problem, not an app or phone problem. :D

And a wife problem. The OP issue is helping parents in 70s get the app installed.. I understand that trying to help my parents in 80 when they call with PC issues (thank goodness for TeamViewer FTW). The other user... they just don’t wanna text him lol.

I use Samsung Messages right now. With one of the more recent updates (One Ui 2.5 I believe), when you go to add a picture or video there is an option to send a link. This will send a full resolution picture or video via link to your text recipient. It is at the bottom right when it brings up your gallery within the Messages app. You can toggle it on or off at your leisure.

That's great, but I can just about guarantee that if you text me a link I will not be clicking on it...

Spot-on. I use TeamViewer as well to help my 90-yo mom with her tablet as well as maintain it. I do the same for my 93-yo mom-in-law's PC with TeamViewer.

Let's accept the facts and give credit when credit is due. Imessage is the clear winner. Would be nice if Apple would open imessage up to android.

Google message, I have no idea what's so great about that app. Both parties have to have it installed to be beneficial. It's limited in features compared to something like Textra. Can't change the notification sound thru the app, it goes thru system sound settings. Can't schedule a message to send at later date or time. Can't pin messages to the top. Textra has a nice feature you can delay the message to be sent for 1 to 9 seconds. I do the 2 seconds..I can't tell you how many times I was able to catch a typo and stop the send so I can correct it.

Bottom line, Google messages needs to get the carriers on board with this RCC thing or open it up to all texting apps. While it's only working between Google to Google messaging, that's no different then WhatsApp IMO. I tried today to get someone to change to Google messaging and they had no interest just like most don't have interest in downloading something like WhatsApp.

Is buying an iphone such as XS in the cards? AT&T $1 deal if you add a line. You get imessage and Facetime - and keep in touch.

I prefer having both as spare backup and use the best of each.

Our grandkids have iphones and have been sending videos by Marco Polo. The regular videos they send have terrible resolution but they are excellent with MP. Just another option for you to consider.

That's the bottom line... if you are only needing to get a few close friends or family on board with an alternate app because they wanna send stuff back and forth, any of the apps mentioned above are quality and will do... just have to find one the parents find easy to use. Whatapp, FB Messenger, etc... all good.

Now getting your whole contact list to use RCS... lol... that's another thing.

Hahaha. My parents use iPhones only. As you know I switch.

Re-reading your original post... if the main reason is for them sending a lot of videos and want to see them in better quality, you could use iMessage with iPad using your email address as your iMessage contact. That's assuming you have an iPad since most do being the best tablet experience available. Then you also have Facetime for chatting face to face now and then. If contacting was urgent, they can use normal text to your mobile number when needed.

I message is nice but not necessary for me. I keep my ipad if I need to use it which is usually never anymore. As far as a message app goes I have always used Google messages beta app. I have tried others that have a better interface but they don't perform as well as the Google app.
I am also finding friends and family switching to Android they are tired of IOS.
