Best Messaging App

Thanks for the suggestions all. So far the stock Google messenger app seems to be working for my meager needs but may give Textra a run. I really wish I could get people to use Skype since I have it on every device possible, Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, Xbox but for some reason most in my circle are content with the stock apps provided by Apple and Google.

Verizon's message+ is excellent. I know a lot of people think it's bloatware but it is one of the better messaging apps I've ever used.

Yeah.... I have switched to Verizon Message+ due to it sending over wifi and it will sync with and allow me to respond from my WiFi tablet

I am using ChompSMS. The only reason I am not using the stock app is I have a need to lock individual messages and I don't find where I can do that with the stock app.

Message+ by Verizon is great and very customizable and you don't have to be on Verizon to use it. It's available in the play store.

I really like Google Messenger. I use it on my LG instead of the stock app. FB Messenger has a lot of the same features as iMessage, but I don't like it as an SMS app.

If Allo gets better SMS support and stops with the "Please download my app so you can talk to me with cool things" links when I text someone, I'll switch over to that.

Am I then in the Dark Ages? And I should try Textra?

I used Handscent the last time I was on an Android phone. When I came back with the Pixel, I looked at Chomp and Textra because Handscent didn't seem as up to date as those. I went with Chomp. Although I don't use it much, I like to be able to scedule texts in the app. I didn't see that available in Textra

verizon message+ , seriously. i know it sounds strange that verizon has a good app. and if you are on verizon it also backs up your messages and you can also use it on your computer.

So, the stock Google messages app is perfectly fine for sending texts and pictures to other people in the US and Canada. All the other messaging apps do is add some bells and whistles and let you customize the UI.

If you want to communicate with people outside the US and Canada, you're going to get dinged pretty heavily by the carrier with per-text charges that add up quickly. In those cases you're best served by a non-carrier messaging app like Facebook, WhatsApp, etc. They're all more or less the same, send messaging via the internet instead of cell signal so can send to anyone around the world free of charge. The only real differentiator is where your friends and family already are, since you're never going to convince everyone to switch to a new app at the same time.
