Best Music Player with Smart Playlists?

I'm on a mission to try and find a music app on Android that is most similar to iPod in terms of the smart playlist function. In particular the Most Played & Recently Played playlists which I used to use a lot.

I had been using Google Music but they don't appear to have any smart playlist functions and then other apps I've tried have also let me down:

Samsung stock app - will only hold 50 songs in each smart playlist and they also don't work very well (as soon as a song comes on this counts as a "play" so automatically goes into Recently Played and adds to its play count, even if you skip it)
Poweramp - appears to only have Recently Added option, unsure if able to add any other smart playlists
Playerpro - appeared hopeful but smart playlists don't appear to actually populate properly for me and won't find a lot of my album art either

Any recommendations?

I'm on the exact same mission and have been for about 2 years now...

When I first started looking for an app to do this, the PlayerPro dev said that they were working on adding smart playlists... it's now 2 years later and they have something resembling smart playlists, but yeah, nothing on the apple idea...

Apparently world peace is easier to achieve than a smart playlist that uses regular playlists as a source...

The music app I developed, Music Player (Remix), has something I call "AutoLists". They can be found in the app's left-side sliding panel. Here are the ones included:

1) NuSongs: Songs recently loaded on your device. (NOTE: You can also configure a notification to automatically pop up to notify you when new songs are added to the device. Tapping the notification loads those new songs automatically).

2) Favorites: A random mix of your most played songs.

3) Chart Toppers: Songs you listen to the most (sorted by most played).

4) Déjà Vu: A random mix of recently played songs.

5) Breath of Fresh Air: A random mix of songs not recently played.

6) Oldies But Goodies: Songs you used to listen to often.

7) Memory Lane: A random mix of songs long forgotten.

8) New Experiences:: A random mix of unlistened songs.

9) Album Picker:: A random selection of 6 albums.

10) Artist Picker:: A random selection of 6 artists.

For AutoLists #1-8, a popup will appear after selecting one which gives you further options. For example, for "Oldies But Goodies", you'll get a popup with the following options:

  • Played more than 1 year ago
  • Played more than 6 months ago
  • Played more than 3 months ago
  • Played more than 1 month ago
  • Played more than 2 weeks ago
  • Played more than 1 week ago

Rocket Player has Recently Added, Recently Played, Top 25, and "Live Lists" that are created by rules you make such as artist, year, play count, last played, genre, is podcast, and more. I don't use these features, so can't say much more about them, but I have been using Rocket Player for a while and for even longer the same developer's iSyncr app for transferring playlists/music files from my PC via Wi-Fi.

Player pro is an awesome music player... it's the one I'm using now... just yeah... after asking for it for 2 years+.... still no smart playlists

Anybody have any new thoughts on this?

What I am also looking for is something that will track playcounts across my phone and my PC.

Is it possible to import playcounts and other data from iTunes to get me started? Also, can it track plays on my PC so that my playcounts and smart playlists reflect all my listening, not just the listening I do on my phone?

No sorry...it only counts plays within the app.

Groove music does on windows side, hopefully it is added to android side. In addition to smart radio, also creates play list based upon play history.

Player Pro works great but has a bad UI from my point of view. Gone Mad Music Player is some how complicated and no Android Auto support. It is also planned for shuttle plus, but I am waiting for years now. Pulsar has it on the Ticket list too I guess (Pulsar is great by the way)

PlayerPro is the most complete and advanced from my point of view. In the latest release, they did improvements to the editor layout and included additional criteria like BPMs, groupings, comments. I don't even use all of those (I use most of the pre-built Top rated, Most played, Recently added) but the comments criteria is handy and I created a few additional based on it as I usually keep comments in tags. All I need and want!
