Benefit of having a reader would be having access to two cards at once or being able to pop in the reader as a secondary storage device to access files as a quick reference while reserving the card that is in the internal slot for files that are needed more often.

One use case I can see would be utilizing a reader for backing up digital photos from a card that came from a digital camera.

Are you saying that you have this Seagate drive and it is working? How is it formatted?

Ian, I presume your query about the Seagate drive was to me: the drive was formatted exFat. I believe Fat32 is also supposed to work, but exFat is more efficient, and and handles larger size files.
I also have a 1 TB Western DIgital hard drive (not a portable, needs it's own power supply) formatted exFat, and it also works just fine.
But for on the go, the small portable Seagate (but any brand should work) gets its power from the Note Pro when plugged in, and if you carry your Sammy around in any kind of bag/satchell, popping the portable hard drive in the same adds no really noticeable weight.
Just remember to format exfat
