I would like your input on the best sms, mms app to replace Hangouts. After struggling with this app since it's arrival on my Nexus 5, I have decided to switch rather than fight. This weekend I received a MMS (Hangout) from my daughter with a couple of pictures of my granddaughter at Disneyland. I tapped on them, but nothing would happen. It didn't come up in Gallery and if I long pressed it brought up the option to (Forward, Details or Delete) it couldn't be swiped in any direction, it could not be saved, if you tried to forward them it said they were attached, but they were not. I could go on and on about the total disaster this app is. I thought perhaps it was my inexperience (not totally eliminating this possibility), but today I went to the Google support page for Hangouts to ask a couple of questions. It ain't just me. This particular app seems to be what Apple Maps was when it debuted. A tip of the cap to those of you who are making this app work for you. Could someone recommend a messaging app for me that doesn't require everyone I text to have the same app. I want technology to make my life easier. Hangouts isn't it for me.

u can download pix by tapping on the picture so it will go full screen, then there is the 3 dot menu at the top right hand corner to save pix.

Yes, I did that. As I described, I couldn't get to that menu. It didn't open in Gallery or Photos. It wouldn't do anything. If I swiped down from the top it just showed the hangouts logo. Thanks for your reply.

If you're looking for an uncomplicated messenger, my vote is for 8sms. Rock solid and easy to use.

I was in the same boat as you. I wanted to like using Hangouts, but just couldn't for whatever reason. Ended up going with 8sms.

I've always used Handcent. Though have not installed it on my N5. A lot of people have been using Textra, which try sometime.

I like Textra, but I use Chomp SMS because I can schedule messages. They are both by the same devs, so maybe they will add scheduling to Textra.

I've been using Textra but have been thinking about switching back to Hangouts. I like the ability to do quick replies with Textra, but I like the interface/UI of Hangouts better.

Also, other people you text with don't have to have Hangouts anymore. With the update to Hangouts, it's now an SMS app too. Also, I've never had issues with opening pics with the Hangouts app.

I alternate between Evolve SMS and Sliding Messaging Pro every few months. Beautiful user interfaces and they just work everytime for me
