Solution, assuming of course you have a problem with the power button, which I do.
Ive read numerous threads that claim certain apps can do it via the Volume Rocker (in particular "WidgetLocker")

There are also apps like autoscreen and awesome on/off, that appear to utilize the sensor, but I worry the phone will turn on by itself in my pocket, in a bag, etc.

Wondering what is the latest/best way to provide one with more "wake" options.

Thanks.

You could try an NFC app and have an NFC chip programmed to wake up the screen, just like the Moto X accessory. Or you could also activate Google Now's hot-word option, but this will certainly have an impact in your battery as it's continuously listening for the Google command, but this should wake the phone up.

I'm using DynamicNotifications. It allows the phone to be waked by either waving your hand over the light sensor, or by the same token pulling it out of your pocket. Flipping your phone from upside down to right side up works as well. It's pretty painless and minimally frustrating.

You dont find that the phone accidentally turns on while in your pocket?

What about battery drain?

Id like to find something that allows me to use the volume rocker as an on/off switch.

No, it's fine in my pocket.
Battery drain so far seems minimal and within acceptable limits, however further testing is needed.

Re: Best solution for waking up the phone?

When my Nexus One power button stopped working I tried several apps. The best was simply called "Fix Broken Power Button":

It turns your phone on by using the volume button, BUT it has an option to not fully turn the phone on unless you tap on a displayed button in case the volume control is pressed accedentally. Your lock-screen could interfer with its ability to work... on the Nexus One you have to somehow prevent your lock-screen from timing out.

I wish I hadn't read this thread... A week after I read a thread about the power button problem on the Nexus One, my power button stopped working after 3 yrs of uses. (WTF?!?)

Hope this helps.

AGR-thanks, this looks like exactly what I have been looking for.

Any stats/thoughts on possible battery drain?

Re: Best solution for waking up the phone?

No matter what I do, I cannot get this thing to work on my HTC One.
