Best text app?

I'm having problems finding a good third party app for texting. I'm not a huge fan of iOS but I do think the texting interface is pretty clean. So I'm looking for something with similar aesthetics. Initially I downloaded Message6 (I believe that's the name). It worked well, however anytime somebody would send a MMS message, it would not download. I would have to open my stock app, which would tell me I have to make it primary first. smh.

I used Chomp SMS on my old phone but similarly, the ability to download MMS messages was intermittent. Figured it was just my phone so tried it on the S6 and the same thing. I thought these third party apps allowed for SMS/MMS. Am I incorrect?

In any case, what do you guys recommend?

Every 3rd party app I've used has worked fine for MMS, my guess is it's just that app. Did you try fiddling with the settings in the app?

Best Message app for me is Textra, I always try to use OEM apps to avoid unnecessary duplicated apps wasting storage and resources, but once I tried Textra last year I've never looked back.

Yes I've tried to mess with settings on both. Not sure if it's Sprint, or what. Now keep in mind I'm a noob to this S6 as well. Maybe I just need to dive deeper into settings. Not sure what else to look into that could be the culprit.

I had been using go sms pro for a few years but I am having issues with MMS since switching to the S6. So I have been using the stock ATT\Samsung Messages app and I think it's much better than it used to be. I like the favorite contact list in the header. The only downside I have seen so far are the color themes - which are limited and not the prettiest but otherwise I am really liking it.

Since I posted this, I accident ran across this - androidcentral. com/top-5-text-message-replacement-apps-android

Erm10, same here re not being fond of the color schemes. Hence the reason I ventured out for alt apps. Seems like I've tried Handcent and GO SMS on my other phone. Wasn't fond of either. I'm going to try that Hello SMS and Textra on the recommendation of erasat.

Fingers crossed!

A million votes for textra! And Google messenger if emojis are not your thing.

Yeah I actually like the new Samsung texting app this year, except as you stated the themes are prohibitively ugly, so I use Hangouts instead.

I'm liking textra thusfar. Very clean, nice options.

I also really like the layout of that Hello SMS. It's very different and I could see it being useful as I have to rotate between texts frequently. But it gave me an error already. Way too early in the game for them to be making mistakes. I'm vulnerable right now as I've been hurt in the past...and ready to divorce an app on a whim. I think it got mad because it wanted to be the default app.

I've used quite a few. Most if not all of the ones mentioned so far. I always come back to Textra, which is what I'm using now. Hangouts is nice, but would be nicer if any of my friends used it as there are times I have access to Wi-Fi but a weak phone signal. I really did like the look of Hello SMS but ran into some MMS problems a few times. Textra is very customizable and I've had no issues so far. Admittedly I haven't given the stock Samsung app a second thought.

Another vote for Textra. All things being equal, Textra does this one thing that makes it better than the stock app -- if I swipe away the notification after reading it, Textra will clear the badge count. The stock one won't clear the badge count unless I open the app and open the conversation. I wasted so much time with that.

Forgive me for my ignorance, but what is a badge count?

It's the little number on the corner of the messaging app that tells you how many unread messages you have.

Figured as such as soon as I clicked reply. lol. That's cool. I'm sure Textra will grow on me. I just need to customize the look to my liking.

Texted is my favorite. Clean, simple and does what is supposed to do... And does it well.

Yes, this Hello is very finicky. Doesn't play well unless it's the default app. And I noticed in its settings it won't allow you to just have a icon notification, or notification with no text content. It's important for me to be able to know a text is received without unlocking my phone. But I also don't want the message to show as I sometimes deal with private info.
