Best way to search for things local to me

I love the commercials that show off Android where the person either types in or just speaks, "Find Ice Cream" or "Find Gas station" etc. I can not figure out how to do that on my phone.

When I go to the car dock app, and search for something, for instance the other night I was searching for Redbox movie rental kiosk it gave me locations in and around Ny city and I am 4.5 hours south of there.

I was just using the GPS map app prior so I know it knew where I was.

What am I doing wrong? What is the easiest and best way to find soemthing close to me when I need it?

You can try the app "Goby". It has some cool features and finds things near you fairly well.

I just add the city name I want to search after I say the thing I'm search for it works great in my mid size town.

I just hit the search button in the Maps app and searched for Kroger today, and it worked fine. It showed me where I was, and then the Krogers in the area around me.

I just hit the microphone icon on the Google search widget and say "find place" and it locates whatever I searched for opens Google maps and displays the one closest to me.

Where and Yelp are really good for me. If you are looking for food places try UrbanSpoon.

I think there may be some issue with my phone then because using the google search or the maps function on my phone it never gives me locations anywhere near me. And I am talking about giving me returns in LA, Ca. an I live outside Baltimore Md.

Or some other random far away place. But the GPS function seems to work fine. If I put in an address it can there easily and gives correct directions. The GPS also finds its location pretty quickly when I turn it on.

How can I determine what is causing this? I assume it could be an APP I loaded, but I have no idea how to figure out which one with out erasing them all.

Any ideas?

Do you have in menu --> settings --> privacy "Use My Location" checked? That may be causing an issue.

I usually add in more info like city or zip code if its having a hard time finding close locations.

The whole MyTouch 3g Slide commercial thing works fine for me. Although not exactly the same, you can hold down your search key and say 'find ice cream'. Or even 'Navigate to Best Buy'. 'Text Bob'. 'Call Bob'. These voice commands are somewhat undocumented, but I use them all the time, and can confirm they work.

I tried a few commands from the search key this morning on my way to work.

"Find Redbox" it found several but none anywhere near me. Skipping several that I know of, and at least a few it had found for me on searches when I give it the address I am looking for.

"Find Shell gas station" again, it found several but skipped a few I know of that were very close to me.

Oddly when I went to the Map on the car navigations screen it instantly popped up the map of where I was, with the arrow indicating my car exactly where I was driving along the road, so it does have a GPS lock and did know where I was.

It is kind of frustrating that I can't use this feature on my phone, as I think it is one of the coolest and most usefull parts of the phone.

BTW I have made sure use current location is checked in the settings menu.

Who or where can I go to for help with this?
