Best Way to keep in touch with Family............for kids without phones.

Currently, and completely entrenched in the Apple eco system but I own a pixel 3 and want to start using it as my daily driver (got it for 16 a month, so why not). My biggest issue is keeping in touch with my little one. He loves to text me and with Imessage and his Icloud account, he's able to do so. i have not been able to find a messaging (preferably video and text) that he can use from an Ipad to an Android phone. Everything I have tried requires a phone number.

Anyone have a good suggestion? Thanks in advance.

My immediate assumption would be Hangouts. It would be required to download on whatever device he's using and would need a gmail account for it I believe

Doesn't Whatsapp require a phone number?

I agree with Hangouts - all that's needed is a Google account.
