I want to do the fast boot method but I read something about it not being permanent.... I am gonna stay stock for now but I want to be rooted.
Should I root using clockwork? I just wanna make sure root is permanent. (I'll use root keeper for OTA)

Thanks
Chris

It's permanent. I rooted using this not long after the phone's release and I've flashed a new ROM or ROM update at least once every week since, wiping the phone each time, and have never lost root.

Sweeeeet. That could also be because most roms have root enabled in them.
Another question, would flashing clockwork recovery be a good idea for backups? I would have to remove it for OTA's though.

Yes, you want Clockwork Recovery. After unlocking, rooting, re-downloading your apps and setting up your phone the way you want it (assigning custom ringtones, setting up your alarm app, adding wifi networks, etc...), the first thing you should do is create a nandroid backup. Later on, after flashing ROMs and trying out other stuff, if you ever want to go back to a rooted stock setup (like if you want to download an OTA), you just restore that stock nandroid backup.

Thank you both! Is there a pretty easy way to flash the stock recovery back? For OTA updates.

Without rooting? To my knowledge, no.

With root? Yes. You do not have to flash a rom, you can just root for flashing recovery.

Is that your question?

Can also do it through fastboot if I recall correctly. Saved my buddies Zio by flashing stock recovery lol.

Also, there's a lot to be said w/ rooting and going through the steps. You gain a LOT of knowledge by doing it the longway, at least once.

I agree with doing it the long way at least once. It has taught me how to fix just about any screw up.

The long way was a PITA and wasted an evening and part of a day to get it to work right. I hate SDK!!!
Anyhow, I am getting a replacment and wuz's rootkit worked amazingly!!!

That's unfortunate. Still, you prolly have a lot more knowledge now than before!

Yeah. Problem was I downloaded all the packages first time installing SDK and that took a few hrs...I was like UGH!
Then it would see the device. After troubleshooting all that I uninstalled SDK after rooting.
Now that I need it, it could be faster this time around.

But wogs? way of unrooting was butter.

I thought I would hate SDK,but after unrooting(adb/sdk) with it and rerooting again(cyber warrior's thread) ,, kinda like it ha :p.

PS: The reason I unrooted though I thought phone mesed up ,,in actuality it was when VZW's 4 g went down in December last year before everyone started posting about it .;) Thanks VZW

I actually had 2 machines set up when I was doing it; my fiancee's HP and my Mac. Waited a few minutes for the drivers to configure w/ Wugs', got frustrated, and was rooted and flashed when the drivers finally finished lol.

I never knew Terminal could be so handy!
