I'm this >.< close to making the commitment to jump ship and go to AT&T when all of my contracts expire. I have a Nexus4 that I've tested Net10 out on, but Net10 does not allow roaming outside of a a true AT&T area. As a result I was unable to get data in some remote rural locations I often go to.

Is there a good way to test drive real AT&T service for one month without a long term contract? I wouldn't need a bunch of data or minutes for phone calls. I just need enough to test things out before I commit to giving Big Red the middle finger and take my business elsewhere.

Thanks!

You can always test out postpaid service without a contract. Just go into an AT&T store and say that you want service on a month-to-month basis. You can try the service for a month. If it works, then port the rest of your lines over (and the first line's phone number) after the month is over. If it doesn't work, you found out before taking the big plunge with all of your lines.

What 21st said. That is what I did before I dropped Sprint for att. I had no contract but they did run a credit check like all post paid accounts do. They will also let you know how many lines they will allow you to have. I have good credit and I got per-aproved for 3 lines. If I want more all I have to do is ask but all I currently have is 1.

Now what plan should I get?

I'm thinking on the individual plan with 450 minutes ($39.99) and 3gig of data ($30.00).

I figure after taxes and such it will cost me ~$80.00

Am I on the right track?

Don't forget about messaging.

Don't forget about messaging.

I won't test drive too many text messages, but I will go well over 1GB of data. So I will pay a-la-cart for them.

When/if I switch I will go with an unlimited talk/text family share plan for my wife and I.

Yes, around $80 should be right, depending on your state taxes and how many PPU text messages you send/receive. This is what I would recommend, as well. Text messaging usually works where voice calling works, so text messages wouldn't need to be part of your testing.

Just signed up, and I'm on my "test drive". I will find out this weekend if AT&T will fit my needs.

So far I love att my self! Much better than my old Sprint service.

It will end up being ~$70.00 including taxes and no activation fee because of my corporate discount!!!

Same for me. For my location the LTE works great.

Good to hear! No LTE here in Vermont unless you have Verizon but I said no thanks to that. HSPA+ gets me 10megs down anyways!

You can buy one of those cheap burner phones that work on AT&T's network. That way you can try out their network for a few dollars without having to invest in a new phone at full price.

The only issue I find with that is if you wanna test the data connection. Every radio can act a little bit differnt. Plus you get a window to try it anyways. so isn't it best to just get the device that you wanna use as your main daily driver?

I bought a Nexus4 a few months ago. It was only $349.00 so no big deal for me. I'm almost positive that AT&T will work fine for me. I will find out tomorrow night when I get to the family cottage and test.

I test drove ATT before making the switch. I bought a contract phone from BB. They don't charge restocking fee. I kept it for just under 2 weeks and returned it. I ended up moving all my lines to ATT last month when the VZ contract was up. It has been very good so far.

Well I have data at the cottage. Its s-l-o-w! I'm not sure what to do now. It will work for email and such, but anything multimedia will be out of the question.

The family and I spend just about every weekend from May through September here.

Now I'm wondering what to do. Do I switch to AT&T or stay with Verizon?

I live in Seattle where AT&T has great LTE coverage, however, the cottage rental we visit once or twice a year has zero coverage. It's somewhat remote, so they only have coverage for Verizon. I'm only down there 2 weeks a year at the most, but in your case several months without service would be rough.

I hate to say this, but after talking with the wife, we are going to stay with Verizon.

My number 1 rule with Wireless Service is: "Buy service with a company that has service where you Live, Work and Play"

AT&T has marginal service where I play. Download speeds were horrible. To pull up a weather radar loop took well over 10 minutes. There were times when I went to town and attempted to call my wife there was no service and she could not get the call. This is a deal breaker for us.

I will revisit this in a few years when my Verizon contracts are ending again.

Sounds like a good decision. The first priority in cell service is that you get, well, cell service.
