Best way to wipe the phone and install Marshmallow update?

Marshmallow has arrived but I don't have near enough storage space to run the update. I'd like to use Samsung's Smart Switch app to backup everything to the SD card then do a factory reset. When I do the reset though will the phone install the update then or do I need to reset, then run the update, and then reinstall my apps?

Not familiar with Samsung's Smart Switch but if you have the proper configurations set to backup your information then it should be easily restored. Don't forget about making sure your backup options on your Setting's menu is configured with Google as a secondary option.

As for the reset and Marshmallow update, yes do the factory reset (again making sure your info is backed up) and then once the factory reset is complete you should be able to reboot/restart the device. Then if the Marshmallow update is available for download go ahead and take the update. Afterwards I would restore your information from your backups. Give the device as much update space as possible before restoring your personal apps & data.

First thing's first - are you doing this on a computer? If so, back everything up so that you don't lose your photos, documents, etc... Once you're sure that you've got them (Smart Switch just does a great big copy) then try deleting them from your phone to free up space.

Uninstall any apps that you don't use and try the update again.

When you do a factory restore, once you log back in Google will try to reinstall all of your current apps so that might not help you out.

However - if you can clear enough space to to the upgrade, get up to Marshmallow THEN do your factory data reset to clear out all the old Lollipops. Do this before you log into your phone (and Google re-installs all your apps and wastes a ton of time).

You can do the FDR (factory data reset) from the boot/recovery menu before you log back in. This will make sure that everything is as clean as you can get it.

I would just pull anything that can easily be replaced off the phone, like music, videos, and pictures. See if that gets you enough space. Do the update, then reset.
