Bit of market research

1. No, I rarely search for new stuff in the market unless it's something I really want to find or feel I need.

2. Recommendations.

3. Force closes definitely, they are the plagues of Android.

4. Just wing it most of the time.

5. If there's not a free version and I've heard it's really addicting.

6. Not really. Monopoly is the closest one, but me and my wife just sit next to each other.

7. Single player on my phone/tablet definitely.

8. Amazon Market because they have the free app every day.

9. Doesn't make a difference.

10. Always. Unless they have an iPhone...no love for them...

1. Do you find it easy to discover new apps on the Android Market?
Not really - searches often come up with irrelevant apps to those that I am looking for and there seems to be no way to filter them by downloads/votes. However, the "Users who installed this also installed" is sometimes a useful pointer, Why Google can't provide some way of ranking/filtering is beyond me!

2. Do you rely on recommendations or do you search categories to find new games?
Yes - reviews on Android forums/websites are often useful. I have found a number of apps that I had no idea that existed until I read a review/mention.

3. What is the most annoying problem with a new game e.g. force close, poor graphics?
Both.

4. Do you read the instructions on how to play or just Wing it?
Usually just wing it but then revert to reading the docs/help if I have problems,

5. When would you pay for a game? (Other than mobile versions of best selling PC/PSP etc games).
When I have tried it. All apps should have a "free" option whereby you can get a feel for the app/game whether limited in levels or functionality, The constraints of the Android Market 15 minutes is far too short for a full committment to buying a sophisticated game/app.

6. Do you play games where multiplayer involves passing the handset round?
No. I am a saddo lone player!

7. Do you prefer single player or multiplayer games?
The option of multplayer is a good idea but most games should also be perfectly playable as a single player.

8. Where do you download most of your games i.e. Android market, Amazon, GetJar?
Only Android Market - Amazon is only available in North America and I worry about security with other sources.

9. Do you like games where you can upload your scores to Facebook or other websites?
Personally I don't like the floods of rubbish that are "auto posted" to social networking sites as it is increasingly making hashtags like #Android completely useless.

10. Do you recommend games you like to friends?
Yes

Hi

As an android apps developer I would be very interested to get some feedback on the following points:

1. Do you find it easy to discover new apps on the Android Market?

About as easily as can be expected. Between the Top New catergories, staff picks, and the trending apps, it's not bad, but an app has to gain some traction to begin with.

2. Do you rely on recommendations or do you search categories to find new games?

Both. I am more likely to download an app recommended to me, but I do look in the new app sections. However, the icon/header image is very important to my opinions on the app, whether to download or not, if I'm just browsing. I guess I think a good icon/header will mean the dev put the effort in, and it's more likely to be good.

3. What is the most annoying problem with a new game e.g. force close, poor graphics?

This is a tough one. I guess I will go with FC's, because if I can't play the game at all, that makes me not like it. However, I won't even download a game that isn't visually appealing. I'm not saying poor graphics technically speaking. There are lots of great games with good graphics that are not technically advanced at all. But if the app looks ugly, I won't buy it. I notice that this usually happens with low quality 3D games.

4. Do you read the instructions on how to play or just Wing it?

Depends. Instructions given in small snippets are easier to read and remember. If you mask a whole screen with a ton of instructions, I give it up as a bad job to try and remember it all.

5. When would you pay for a game? (Other than mobile versions of best selling PC/PSP etc games).

It would have to satisfy 3 criteria.

1) Good initial presentation. Well written description, good screen shots, great icon, etc.
2) Good concept. Is it an angry birds rip-off? Won't buy it. Is it something that sounds fun and I haven't seen it? Then yeah, I'll consider it.
3) Good reviews. I am not an early adopter when it comes to apps. If it is a paid app and hasn't had many reviews yet, I'm very hesitant. This is mainly with games that I may not be able to refund.

6. Do you play games where multiplayer involves passing the handset round?

Not on phones. On tablets, yes.

7. Do you prefer single player or multiplayer games?

Single Player. I won't hate a game for including multiplayer, but on my phone, I like a get in-get out type experience that multiplayer seldom encourages.

8. Where do you download most of your games i.e. Android market, Amazon, GetJar?

Google market easy.

9. Do you like games where you can upload your scores to Facebook or other websites?

Not a feature I've ever used. Make sure there is a confirmation dialog so I don't do it accidently, and I don't mind.

10. Do you recommend games you like to friends?

Yes.

Hey, glad to help out, hope this does that!

1. I usually only discover apps through Amazon App Store when they do FAOTD, or I'm looking for a specific type of game (e.g Tower defense etc.)

2. Search categories

3. I would say force closures, or having to download dependencies after install. I understand this is a limitation of the Market, but pretty annoying.

4. Wing it.

5. When it's priced right, fills a need and it's truely worth it (obviously personal pref, but Doodle Jump, Root Explorer, Peggle, Airport Mania)

6. No, can't say I would find a game like that fun, but then again I mainly game on the go when I have minutes to pass, not as a focal point of social gatherings

7. Single, see above

8. Android Market or Amazon Appstore

9. Not especially, I don't do social networking, no FB, Twitter, G+, although having those features wouldn't detract me (Having to have a FB account for Spotify guaranteed they would never get a penny of my money)

10. Yes, but in person (Hey I downloaded this game the other day xxx....you should check it out)

1. No, not unless I know the name of the app and can search for it.
2. A little bit of both, but I mostly just search for new games.
3. Force closes are the worst. Next to that lag in gameplay is very annoying.
4. Sometimes I read the instructions if the game looks complicated, if not, I just wing it.
5. If a review comes back really praising the game, I'll usually go ahead and download it. Feedback from friends also sways my decision.
6. Yes. Uno is a great game for passing the handset around. As an example.
7. mostly I prefer single player games.

1. Yes, but obviously there are better ways to discover new apps, such as friend recommendations and Reddit.

2. I mainly rely on recommendations, but when I'm bored, I find myself browsing market.android.com for new apps.

3. The most annoying problem to me is when a game comes out that doesn't support more than a few devices (like my Kindle Fire running CM9)

4. Depending on the perceived complexity of the game, I may read the instructions, but most games are simple enough that I don't need to.

5. I pay for games that cost more than $3 if they're extremely well-received and seem like something I would play. If it's less than $3, I pay for it if it has a decent concept and doesn't involve micropurchases. I would rather pay more up-front than have to pay more in-game.

6. I rarely do, but there have been specific occasions like with Catan and UNO where I have.

7. I prefer Singleplayer games.

8. I buy most of my games through the Android Market.

9. No, because it clutters my newsfeed and that of my friends.

10. I recommend games to my friends all the time.

1. Not too hard, but I rarely find anything new purely from searching the market
2. I usually rely on recommendations from sites like AC or AndroidPolice, and sometimes I use AppBrain
3. Force closing is probably the most annoying, but I also don't like it when it takes 5 minutes of setup before I can actually get to playing
4. I usually read the instructions
5. I rarely pay for a game that is more than $2 and I NEVER pay for a game that I have not tried before, either in a trial/demo version or played on a friend's phone
6. I have never played a "pass n play" type game on my phone
7. I like both single and multiplayer, but in general the single-player games tend to be more fun for me
8. Android Market
9. No I could not care less about letting my friends know my scores, and I'm sure they don't care either
10. Yes I recommend games all the time

1. I think its kind of easy. Its certainly not difficult but it could improve. Not very high on the list of things i'd like to change though. The addition of new and most famous is a must.

2. 99.5 % on recommendations from friends or websites.

3. Mostly games or apps that are late on supporting ICS (or any other new versio), then the force close. As far as the graphics, while there are games that have amazing graphics there are others who are awful. Certainly need to addressed to developers of both games and applications.

4. Most of the times I don't read the instructions. But I do like the games that come with tutorials who show you how to play.

5. To consider buying a game/app the price would be low. Then I would have to read reviews from multiple sources and see game play videos on youtube, if there are any. In other words the game (or the developer) would have to make an effort for me to spend money, and sure worth it!

6. Not really...

7. I mostly play single player games because I use my phone as a casual gaming device. But it would certainly like the idea I could play multiplayer games sometimes. If I may, I would recommend the Raging Thunder racing game were you can make a lan party (wirelessly) and play. It even supports other platforms (iOS).

8. Android Market.

9. Sure!

10. Of course!

1. Do you find it easy to discover new apps on the Android Market?
Yes, though mostly I rely on Android-oriented sites for app recommendations.

2. Do you rely on recommendations or do you search categories to find new games?
Recommendations, mostly. Search by categories only when I have the time or if I am bored.

3. What is the most annoying problem with a new game e.g. force close, poor graphics?
I got 2 actually:
i) Some games do not have an Exit button, and the Back button does not make the game exit (from the lobby/intro if you know what I mean).
ii) Instability, frequent FCs.

4. Do you read the instructions on how to play or just Wing it?
Mostly just wing it.

5. When would you pay for a game? (Other than mobile versions of best selling PC/PSP etc games).
When it is recommended by friends/websites, catches my fancy, and after I have tried its demo/free version.
Have bought a few games point-blank (the Story series from Kairosoft) though, since I know the quality of their games.

6. Do you play games where multiplayer involves passing the handset round?
No, hate to pass an extension of myself around.

7. Do you prefer single player or multiplayer games?
Single

8. Where do you download most of your games i.e. Android market, Amazon, GetJar?
Android Market. Would like to use Amazon too, but apparently Amazon doesn't know the rest of the world exists.

9. Do you like games where you can upload your scores to Facebook or other websites?
No preference, but just make it optional to do so.

10. Do you recommend games you like to friends?
Duh. Yes.

1. Do you find it easy to discover new apps on the Android Market?
Not really. It's usually easier to search for something I want. The home page and the "top picks" sections are quite stagnant, doesn't move very fast.

2. Do you rely on recommendations or do you search categories to find new games?
Recommendations mostly. categories are often not specific enough...?

3. What is the most annoying problem with a new game e.g. force close, poor graphics?
regular force close (a couple is tolerable), no autosave, lag on a phone with a decent cpu.

4. Do you read the instructions on how to play or just Wing it?
wing it~ and go back to instructions if i get stuck, or something looks less than intuitive, or it's a puzzle game with specific rules.

5. When would you pay for a game? (Other than mobile versions of best selling PC/PSP etc games).
When it's nice enough that I know I won't regret paying for it. Either because of a demo, or I've played the same company's other (similar) games before. Or because of a favourable review that seem to describe a game I would like. Or when it's 10 cents, but that's a totally different story.

6. Do you play games where multiplayer involves passing the handset round?
Not much.

7. Do you prefer single player or multiplayer games?
Single player mostly, haven't played much multiplayer...

8. Where do you download most of your games i.e. Android market, Amazon, GetJar?
Market, Amazon and GetJar just for their free stuff. Once in a blue moon I'll find something I really like there, but if I want to pay for something, Market is the only place I can use.

9. Do you like games where you can upload your scores to Facebook or other websites?
No.

10. Do you recommend games you like to friends?
Yes!
