I have a Samsung S9 SM-G9600 with the newest possible Android, which is 10.
It's an Android problem, not S9 problem.

I bought this when I lived in China. I think it was originally a China Unicom fork of Android.

And when I left China, I tried to root it myself, resulting in a bricking, where it wouldn’t go past the ‘choose language’ screen.

Took it to a few shops, one was able to restore it.

And all was well for a year.

Now I downloaded the BiliBili (the YouTube of China) apk from APKPure (link to APKPure on BiliBili’s own website), and I went to the downloads folder to try to install it, and that’s where the problem started.

Before I could find it, the phone froze and a cycle of restarts started with bizarre glitches on the screen.

Pardon the mangy screen protector. Genius curved edge...

Somehow after many spontaneous and my own restarts it seemed to have got back to normal. But the screen had a purplish tinge, and when brightness was pulled below 30%, it would be green

When I tried to use files by Google to find and delete that apk, the phone froze again, an hour of restarts and glitches.
I managed to start in safe mode, but it was glitching there as well.

I was not able to Restart into recovery mode by pressing the Bixby, power and volume down.
I got here (image translated by WeChat), and up-volume only took me to Downloading...

I deleted files by google and tried to access the download folder with updated My files by Samsung. I could not find the APK anywhere.

I had downloaded it there by sending it to myself on WeChat (the WhatsApp of China). I’ve done that many times with many apk’s.

And it froze again and glitch restarts started.

When I managed to get back to normal mode, I wanted to at least do Google One backup. But it required Google photos, and when it was about 80% finished installing, phone froze and glitching restarts started again.

After an hour of that, and getting back to normalish mode, turns out photos did get installed, so at least I was be able to do the backup.

But of course soon after, trying to use an app, back to the cycles.

Strange thing, during one of the cycles when screen is dark, when press power and volume down, it does make the shutter-sound for screen capture, as if the phone were running normally.

Thank you muchly,

Roy

Welcome to Android Central forums. You've included a lot of information and several scenarios but I'm not really seeing the question you have right now.

Are you still trying to install BiliBili?

Are you trying to get rid of the purple tint?

Are you just trying to get to run normally?

Not to judge a phone by its cover but is that tape? Looks like your device may have seen better days. I'm not sure this is the right audience for some of your questions. Side loading the BB app seems like it should be straight forward since it is from one of their trusted sites but I don't think we can dismiss the big issue of bricking the phone and trying to recover from that. I guess my questions about that would be.

Where did you finally get the phone repaired, like what region or location? I ask this because my next question is, did they restore it to a Chinese version of Android or have you just defaulted the language to mandarin but the software is US or EU? If the OS isn't Chinese that could explain the issue you experienced with sideloading the app. Then again it could be related to an imperfect ROM, where some flaw in the software is causing issues.

I'm not sure if someplace like XDA Developers could help with software. They talk a lot about rooting and ROMs but I don't know how deeply they dive into internation device versions.

The purple screen is a known issue, I thought just with the S9, but evidently with other Samsung devices too. I guess it is the yellow screen that the S9 is known for. Here are two videos that may help with those issues.

I had a device that would bootloop randomly, that's the restarts over and over you mention, and you could get it to stop by removing the SIM card. Not sure if this applies to your device but there was something about it searching for a signal at start up that caused a bootloop. Just something to try I guess.

Someone may chime in with time to upgrade and I can't say that I would not agree with that.

Thank you very much for a very detailed response.

The phone is as good as dead.

So my only question is if or how it could be saved.

If I try to use some app for a few minutes, the restart cycle will go on for hours.

I would not mind the purple tinge. And I could do without the BB app.

The phone is in like new condition, front and back. But the genius useless annoying bling curved edge (which they finally killed off in latest models, after years and years of complaints) leads to protector (even one put on by pro) peeling off, so now indeed held down by type. Having a protector case contributes to peeling, as it rubs in the same spot where screen protector barely hangs on on the edge. Again, genius design.
I am in Europe at the moment, and labor rates are atrocious here, and I don’t take the phone anywhere anyway.

They did indeed solve my bricking issue here (for an atrocious price). The android for is Chinese, but has other system languages available.

I did post this on XDA, but unfortunately, the Redditdisease “YOU WILL OBEY OUR NONEXISTENT RULES OR PAY THE PRICE ”has spread even there.
At least instadelete is still done by humans, not bots like on Reddit.
I posted in the general forum, just like here, and they moved it to s9 (even though more than half of questions in the general forum are about specific phone models, even mentioning it in the titles), and s9 is an old phone, so I don’t see anybody seeing/replying the post there.
But manlets can’t live without their Germanic rulelets being obeyed, Ja!

I did pop out the sim even though it wasn in airplane mode, i'll see if it helps.

It has the latest Android, and if it didn’t, I’m sure it would crash trying to download or install it.

The green/purple tinge is not caused by blue light filter or adaptive display (both turned off), but this new problem, whatever it is.

Thank you again,

Another video junkie

Welcome to AC!
This device has been altered at one point , tried to root it install custom ROM the Knox in your screenshot is 0x1

If your in this mode from your screenshot you can try Odin and Frija to flash the stock firmware and see what happens but the s9 Series has suffered from pink tint possible purplish those screes at that time were problematic with color cues
