Black borders when outputting video to TV

I am using a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 connected to TV via an MHL to HDMI adaptor. When I output video from the BBC iPlayer app or from the Amazon Video app, the picture appears on the TV screen with black borders around it. I think this is because it is displaying the full 16:10 output of the tablet screen on the TV, rather than just outputting the 16:9 content of the video itself. I don't get this problem using the Google 'Play Movies and TV' app which works properly and plays video full screen without black borders.

(I have also tried this using an iPad for comparison, and he iOS versions of both the iPlayer app and the Amazon Video app output the video at full screen without any black borders.)

Is there a way to fix this on the Samsung Galaxy Tab S so I can output proper fullscreen video on my TV from these apps?

First of all this may not be the answer you are looking for.

If a video is formatted for a certain size then you canNOT eliminate the black borders without either chopping off something from the top/bottom or sides or distorting the image by stretching either left to right or top to bottom.

But I don't know about the Native Video player and whether it contains options to fill the screen but I think it may. The other day using Screen Mirroring, the movie I was watching did fill the screen. But as I was watching from a thumb drive, I had battery issues. When I moved the video to the Tab S so I could charge through the usb port, I also fiddled with an icon in the video player. Suddenly when watching I had bars, top and bottom. So I believe it can eliminate the bars. But, again it can only do that by chopping off or distorting, I am fairly certain. But there may be clearer means using some 3rd party video players that can also do it.
