Often times I use the speaker phone when on a call.the screen normally goes black in those situations. If I touch the screen nothing happens what am I doing wrong?

It seems that I can tap the screen multiple times and there's no response whatsoever it just remains black. often times the other caller has to end the call for the screen to reappear.

So you're making a call. And where is the phone? Because if the proximity sensor is covered it will turn the screen off.

I am having some sort of problem like this? When I receive a phone call and bring the phone to my ear, the screen goes off, when I finish speaking and bring the phone away from my ear to end the call the screen stays off. If I tap the screen nothing happens? I have to press the power button to get the screen back. seems a problem with that stupid proximity sensor again?

Try making a call.put the phone on the table and move your hand above the sensor.see if it turns off and on or it stays off.if it stays off then you should get it replaced as its still a very new phone.

I don't think this is a case or screen protector issue.

If i make a call and put phone on table, after 30 seconds the screen times out (in display settings my screen is set to time out at 2 minutes).

At that point i can move my finger all over the screen and nothing happens. I can tap it multiple times and nothing happens. I need to count but around tap number 5 or so the screen wakes up.

If i put phone on table, make call and cover proximity sensor the phone goes black immediately. Indicating the sensor is working. Be if i remove cover from sensor, screen reappears. So i think the sensor is working.

It seems that once it goes black after 30 seconds it simply doesn't want to wake up again from screen touches.

I checked my phone and the proximity sensor is working OK ( for phone calls, its not working OK for anything else) but, around 30 seconds the screen locks. My phone is set to time out at 30 seconds, I have not tested it at 2 minutes time out or a tap of 5 times?

This has been normal operation since at least the Note 8. If tapping the screen doesn't restore it a single click of the power button will.

Seems odd for normal operation.

Any idea why it would operate this way? What's the rationale

Based on the comment above that this has been normal since the note 8 I did a little bit of research. This is indeed considered normal. Many people recommend an app called keep screen on as a workaround for this.

Samsung if you're listening you really need a fix for this this should not be part of normal operation or at a minimum have it an option.
