Black screen, need my contacts off the phone...not backed up

My screen on my S4 went black. It still powers up. It is not locked. My contacts and text messages are not backed up. Can I get to a file(s) that will allow me too transfer the contacts or export them without the screen working?

Welcome to Android Central! I'm afraid not. Locally saved contacts and SMS messages are saved to SQLite database files in protected system directories, so you won't be able to access them unless the phone was already rooted. For contacts, at least, I strongly recommend associating them with your Google account, so that they get synced automatically to your Google Contacts in the cloud. Keeping them only in your local Phone account is risky, as you can see now, since they don't backup or sync anywhere on their own--it's up to you to keep them manually backed up.

One possibility is to connect your phone to a monitor or TV using an MHL cable. If the touchscreen still functions, you could then still use the phone. If the touchscreen doesn't function, then maybe you could also connect a USB mouse via OTG cable, but the problem is that there's only one microUSB port. I'm not sure if you can use a Y splitter to connect both.
